[Autodesk] Character Modeling Techniques

Hey everyone! I am new to game design / 3D models, and was curious about how people go about making more complex models. I am familiar mostly with Maya and Mudbox but feel like there is more to these programs than I know. I am working on a game that works with robots. I found some really cool robot models from other games such as this one:

How do you even start a model like this? How do you get the parts to look so clean and smooth? Are there any tutorials for making complex models like this?
