[Autodesk] Character Modeling Techniques

Hello everyone! I am relatively new to the world of 3D-modeling / 3D Game Creation. I want to create moderately complex models but feel like I am missing something.

I’m working on a game that uses robot characters and found some awesome models of Mechanical characters from other games such as this one:

I am lost as to where to even start on a model like this. How do you get the parts to look so plastic-like and smooth? What parts do you model first? Are there any good tutorials for modeling things like this? I mainly use Maya and Mudbox.
