Cool thread, I just found it and thought I’d say hi.
I’m an artist working at MicroForte in Sydney. I’ve been here almost a year now. Prior to that I was working at Ratbag in Adelaide. And even prior to that, I studied at the AIE in Canberra.
We work pretty much in Max here, though I’d love to give Maya a go, just to see what it’s like for game development.

Yeh! This thread is alive
Update from me: Just finished my dip in multimedia (boy was it a breeze). I’m looking for a job now, but I believe I still need to improve my skills alot more before I start getting any offers. So I’m thinking of taking the AFTRS 3D animation course… and then taking some art classes this year :arteest: . Sound good? I hope it is, and I hope I can get in
/me keeps looking :insane:
Well done Sphere!
Have you looked at the madacademy course?
www.madacademy.com.au <-- It’s max focused, but looks great.
Thanks erilaz. Yeah, I did check it out. I’m not sure whether to take it or not… I mean I want to learn Maya. Maybe I can work out a way to do both. It’s also quite a hike from my place.
We are looking at running some maya courses in a few months pretty much mid ranged stuff it will be a 5 day course.
It will be tought by someone from alias and you will walk away with Alias certifaction.
I’ll post more details as i can.
Oops :surprised I didn’t notice this thread thread either?
Nor did I know this site was Austalian… And I’ve been comnig here since biginning of 2k2
Anyway… I’m not in the industry, and by looking at this thread, I think my reason why are well founded.
I’ve been intrested in graphic design since I was in high school (hey, I once flogged a bunch of ‘Design Graphic’ magazines from the library) but I got the impression that unless you’re skills are top notch, then it’s too hard an industry to break down here. Too competetive!
I’ve only done a few small web sites for friends and collegues, and have been interested in 3D since I got my hands on a copy of Bryce 2 :insane: I’ve only fairly recently got my hands on Lightwave (it was cheapest at the time) so hopefully as my skills increase I will reconsider leaving the IT industry for something more creative
.
Anyway… I’m not in the industry, and by looking at this thread, I think my reason why are well founded.
Oracle, just keep at it. All skills take time. If I had thought the same way, I wouldn’t have a job doing 3d now.
It’s always useful to have more than one skill though, and if you’re in the IT pool, then by all means keep those skills going as well!
I’ve found the job market is always looking for multiskilled people, they’re just not finding the people they want. We went through around 26 applicants the other day and only one ended up being what we were after. It doesn’t mean the other 25 were no good, it’s just that we were after something specific. It’s the way of the world unfortunately. EVERY industry is competitive!
I started out doing Director Lingo programming and image editing and worked my way up to 3d modelling and animation. It’s taken me 5 years to reach that goal from when I left high school, and I’m STILL not very good. I will keep at it though.
You probably didn’t want a life-story, but I hope you understand what I mean.
Thank erilaz… I know exactly what you mean. I also have been trying to learn multiple skills to give myself a better chance. I’d say I’m moderately good at image editing, and web site creation, but considering my interests have shifted to CG recently, I’d like to hone my skills a bit more before I venture out.
As far as my IT skills are concerned, I’ve worked for 3 years at a helpdesk (for Australasias largest Independent ISP) and am on the eve of attaining my Cisco certification… So you can see I’m torn between IT and CG.
As you said, though, I’m sure if I decide to venture out into the CG industry, my IT skills wlil be a great help.
I used to work in design, and ended up moving to 3D, cos my design skills were pretty much crap… go figure?
Anyway, the main thing I carried across from design were my photoshop and image editing skills. Kowning how to work a good texture is as important as modelling or animating, so if you’ve got that in your favour, then your a third of the way there.
Just keep at it.
Hello fellow Aussies. :wavey:
Didn’t notice this thread until now. Duh. So many of you here!
I’m a 3D animator working in Sydney. I’m the only animator in my office and the only Maya user in the company unfortunately. Before I started this job I did the Silicon Graphics Centre course which was OK for me but not so great for others. A couple of my friends from the course are working at Animal and Rising Sun now. I probably want to move into a more creative field soon.
Just noticed the thread O_o
My background…self taught 3dsmax for about 1.5 years using max2.5. Then i began doing a 3dsmax course at AIE (Academy of Interactive Entertainment, which is kinda part of MicroForte) this course was for one year, then i went on to the “Avanced Max” course. Great courses btw.
My Girlfriend also did the same courses…this is actually how we met. But she had no prior knowledge of max.
Ahh yeah we both live in Canberra. and yes…the fires were pretty amazing…and no our houses did not burn to the ground
Thank you and goodnight.
THANK GOD! I decided to go through every single post here at CGTALK since the beginning and found this one!
Im over the moon that this is Aussie ran…thought there are VERY few aussies here. AWESOME STUFF:applause:
My general story is I got my VCE last year at Beaconhills College in Pakenham. Im going to JMC in Sth Melb actually next Monday (a week from today) and doing a Degree in Digital Animation. Not sure if you guys have heard of JMC…there isnt just VCA, RMIT, and AFTRS. (and any others Ive forgotten).
Im REALLY PUMPED this year for not only Uni and my course but also the AEAF is also starting up in Melbourne, known as the Melb Affects and Animation Festival! :buttrock:
Im certainly planning to go this and love to meet up with any other artists. To find out more bout this event go to:
THANK GOD for DLF! Thats the sorta thing Ive been looking for for YONKS!
Does anyone know anyone at Complete Post? Michael Gracey? Peter Stubb (I think thats his name) I know these guys through a brief film course I did back in 2000 at AFTRS Melb. Is there anyone from Post here at CG? Or anywhere else?
When I start Uni Ill be looking around to get into the industry, hopefully around Melb somewhere. There are like STACKS of film and animation places there. But I got to get that show reel happening first
I use Studio Max, Combustion, P|Shop, and Premiere. Im planning to get stuck into Maya and Softimage 3 and hopefully Softimage 3|D as well soon. Im essentially a film director with animation tendencies if you know what I mean, lol.
REALLY hope to see someone at the MEAF, or AEAF, if I get there. Might see someone through DLF as well as Ive just registered.
Cheers pples:thumbsup:
I feel more at home now.
I’m not in the industry as yet, but it’s where I’ll end up.
I’m currently working at DTDesign, (www.dtdesign.com) a web design studio in Melbourne.
I’ve used Max since it’s DOS days, and am currently trying to put together a show reel.
It’s great to know you guys are out there doing well.
I’ll keep this post bookmarked.
cheers,
Kappa
