#301

Hi Everyone,

My name is Aysegul, I live in Melbourne and just graduated from the Adv. Dip of Multimedia(Design) at Swinburne Prahran.
I will be doing 3rd year of the uni Bachelor Degree course in 2006, yay!!!

It would be great to meet some other CG artist/students in the same city.
I just finished my final Management project, here is a link to the thread

I am from California staying in Sydney for a couple months working at Animal Logic. Feel free to drop a line and say “Hi.”

#303

sweet! i just moved into spring hill a few weeks ago with some mates. BA Animation graduate.

oh and freelancers in Brisbane, how did you guys get started? i find the prospect of starting freelancing more daunting than starting studio work, but as a recent graduate i need options!

#304

Good to see this thread is still alive, Don’t want to sound negative but Brisbane is not the best place to freelance. Don’t know what the games market is like but in terms of vfx…

Cutting Edge is probably the largest on-going team here and its nearly all full time. Other than that there is only really Photon and The Post Lounge

Having worked and lived in Melb. Sydney and Bris, I can honestly say that the only place I would consider freelancing in Australia is Sydney. Love it or hate there is just so much more opportunity there.

#305

I completely agree - I was just saying the same thing to someone the other day. Brisbane’s got a strong game industry, but for vfx there’s photon and CE, and occasionally beeps (whatever they’re called these days).

I actually just moved back to AU and set up my own shop in Bris, it’s working well because all of my clients are in Los Angeles, and if I need to fly to Syd for a meeting it’s a few dollars really, so it’s a small enough world that I can successfully survive in Bris - although if you’re a freelancer I’d never recommend it. Hit up Syd or else go off to Weta or Oktobur in NZ.

#306

hey thats cool Alan. whats the shop called and wheres it based? are you planning to take it far?

#307

Just found this thread and i thought i would post.
Im Cameron (or Cam) Im 20 and im from sydney, about 3/4 way through a 3d animation and graphics course at CGC, dont really know what i wanna do afterwards, i love special effects and blowing stuff up etc, but i also wouldnt mind doing somthing with cars, such as car design etc…
One problem is my dad who is an engineer is still pushing for me to do somthing a bit more technical such as architecture (which i was originally going to do and have a cert IV in) or some other more technical career.

So if anyone has any ideas of what i could do lemme know.

Allan - Love some of your work, been using some of your tutorials off your site and they are great help, good work mate.

Don’t know about UWA and Curtin but ECU has two 3D uniits. One in Lightwave and the other in Max. I too am dissapointed there are no 3D/VFX courses.

#309

hey y’all,

Whats the state of CG in oz at the moment? Specifically melb? I left in a huff a 4 years ago and now I hear things have improved. Is this true?

#310

Melb specifically, things are turning up… compared to 4 years ago definately! It’s still not easy to find a secure job (espeically in the games industry), but things are getting better.

Hey bristow, I was a Swinburne grad as well!

#311
pssst.. can you fill me in where? i'm missing out on this turnaround, and want in! :)

#312

Heh. It’s more that the industry is becoming stronger in Melbourne. That doesn’t mean extra jobs though unfortunately!
The one thing that has surprised me (and I won’t name names) is the amount of game companies shafting artists out of pay, either through not paying promised overtime/bonuses, or contracting them at a lower rate than they originally agreed on. It’s rather disappointing.

#313

I’ve heard of one or two guys who has gone to melbourne recently for work. After so many years of folks leaving to look for opportunities, myself included, it would be nice to think that the trend has been reversed !

#314

… in Melbourne. Coffee is overrated

#315

Central Tafe has a year long Advanced Diploma 3D Course but they use Maya.

#316

I would hope so, I too know someone about to move from Sydney to Melbourne for a game dev job!

hey guys i’m a student in Sydney. www.eagle4.net i use 3d studio max

i hear you all complaining about your courses. but i can honestly say i got scewed. i am studying at AIT in Sydney. they told me they offered a 3d course. i showed them some of my 3d work, telling them i want to get into 3d modeling as a job. they offer me a partial scholorship, still expensive, but not as bad. now when i get into my course it turns out 3d is only a small part of their diploma course. oh and when i showed my work to the 3d teacher he said just form seeing that i could be exempt frm the whole course. as it turns out. i actually know more than my teacher. and thats from free tutorials on the net.

so yeah. i’m not too happy…

anyway its good to meet more aussies who are interested in 3D.

i am wanting to do games, but particles really intrest me… are there many jobs doing particles?
i know Allan Mckay does all that kind of thing.

Hey everyone!

Being born in Hobart and grown-up in Germany (since I was four years old) makes me some kind of Pseudo-Aussie, but I just hope for your acceptance anyway.

I’m planning to move back to Australia in the next weeks/months to start a new life and (hopefully) a career as FX Animator. So my question is:
Do you think that the (temporary) distance is fatal for applying and I should move to Australia BEFORE job-hunting?

This may be a dumb question, but it really concerns me, since I’m now living with my parents (for free) and I obviously want to move to the city where I find work. The other way involves more expenses, difficulties and a lot of guessing, but maybe makes it easier getting hired by becoming a local.

  Any advice is greatly appreciated!
