It’s just great.
Okay, that was just a lie. I’ve never left Brisbane as I’ve been doing the remote-freelance thing.
That ramping up sounds pretty interesting, ponder ponder.

hah I drink anything and everything
but it’s good to have the taste of home at my fingertips
hey allan , been watching your new reel, awesome,![]()
bought one of your afterburn dvds last week, you say your working on a new one??
wat is it going to be on?? and is it through cg academy??
hey mate, well the next one’s probably through turbosquid, I want to do some more through CG academy although I want to work on a few more later this year that are probably going to be my best - and those and the next one I want to exercise a bit more control with. The first DVD I released I kind of just had to get out there since it was behind schedule and everyone was getting antsy. And the CGA ones were around that time too. Ideally I’d like to work out a way to have mass distributors, since I know some people might be in India and have to get shipping from the states, same with europe and australia. So I’d rather have resellers close by so it’s cheaper for them, eitherway I think it’s a bit stupid if you pay $60 for a DVD and another $40 for shipping… Turbosquid had always said they’d release a snail mail ground shipment option, although seems it hasn’t happened. So next dvd I’m going to make sure they have that option before I let them release it.
New DVD… I wrote a list somewhere, I’m in canada right now so don’t have the whole DVD on me (forgot it back in Aus). It covers scripting basic AI, building complex setups in multiple events and then plugging them altogether (for example I make a video on how to build really complex explosions consisting of debris, dust, smoke, explosions and fire, and then later I make another video on how to script a very intuitive system for distributing and controlling tanks that drive over terrain through a minefield doing the best they can to avoid running into eachother or the mines… and of course if they do run over a mine… then we plug the explosion we made from the other tutorial in there… suddenly you have a huge huuge scene of explosions, fire debris and other crazy stuff going off allover the place ready to render that’s all automated. plus the interface for distributing the tanks and mines and other stuff is very easy to control and manipulate). Also cover stuff like having objects fall in water and splash and bob up and down on the spot, as well as the wake across the water, all the foam and water interaction, well lets say there’s dozens of cool videos in there, I’m extremely happy with it. I get a fair bit into scripting in certain sections, and use pflow tools a bit, but nothing in there is too over the top. Everything here I do start to finish, so I’ll cover both the particles, shaders and rendering it all and in some cases comping it too. Pretty cool.
PS. Sorry for the big plug
Well mate, I think you can definetly count me in for jumping in for the DVDs.
Hope Canada is treating you well. Look forward to seeing the DVD in completion and getting my mitts on it. Should be as good as they’ve always been
Hey fellow aussies, I’m not a professional (barely even an amateur) but I’d like to get more active around here as I learn some 2D and 3D art as a hobby, so I thought this was a good place to introduce myself
So anyway, I’m in Melbourne, currently working in IT at a major bank, and dabbling in a hundred different interests in my spare time: film making, 2d art, 3d art, game programming, writing, recording and performing music. No particular aspirations to go professional in any of these areas, I’m pursuing them purely to have something fun and creative to do and to have something (hopefully) entertaining to show for it.
Unfortunately with work, getting stuff done around the house and spending time with my wife, I don’t get enough time to work on these sort of things, and I tend to get distracted between them, so don’t get to practise them enough to actually get good at them
I’ve managed to get hold of a copy of Max 6 though, so I’m hoping I can find the time to put a bit more effort into learning the tool and 3d art in general.
Anyway, hope to see you all around, this really is a fantastic resource (and I’m extremely happy to see it’s an Aussie site, I was not aware of that)
I’ll hopefully have a site up in the near future with some of my finished projects (music and films, haven’t got far enough with anything else where I’d want to show it off  )
Rock on :buttrock:
cheers for that reply allan.
Dvd ideas sound great. Ive really got to get into scripting. it seems to pop up so much in your dvds… just seems so boring… im hoping to buy the scripting dvd from cg academy in the future.
do you think scripting is a must know?? for commercial work. or does it just make pflow much easier and flexible. is scripting hard to pick up?
cant wait for your dvds
cheers
Just saw this thread thinking i better pop in
Nice to see lots of aussies :wavey:
I’m a freelance 3D artist mainly dealing with Character modeling, animation and rigger using Lightwave, XSI and Modo, zbrush. Pretty much been fulltime from job to job for afew years now. Also develop plugins for Lightwave and other softwares…
seems afew of the DLF are here too.
I just can’t believe I missed this thread for 3 years!!
I’m from Canberra and like to pretend that someday a major non-games studio will open here. I’m stuck here you see, hehe. I did two years (2001, 2002) at the AIE which were really great. I think I was there at a truely great stage because the teachers I had were really good and were eager to teach. At least one of them moved on to Ambience since. It was before the Maya course went up in price too (was only $3k).
In 2003 I did some part-time instructing of the AIE’s Maya course which was fun, and wrote most of my tutorials.
Currently I’m doing AnimationMentor, am staying obsessed with Maya/CGSociety and am preparing to launch into lots (hopefully) of work as 3D Coordinator of a small studio in North Carolina (from here in Canberra).
If anyone would like to pay me to be a professional Maya/CG fanatic, I’m all ears!!
I know there are more Aussies hiding on this site too…
EDIT: Oh right I’m on the DLF too and have been to the AEAF twice.
sweet. I’m kinda suprised how many aussies there are in the industry. I’m in Canada right now and there’s another one in the next room.
great to see more aussies kicking around. Seems there’s a lot going on right now with ghost rider and superman being filmed in Aus and Charlottes web being done in Melbourne.
I guess I better write myself up something here too… I’m an unemployed bum that’s aspired to work in 3D all my life, I’m 35 with 60 kids and will give head for roto work…
that’s about all - anyone got any roto work?
PS. JamesBarnes, scripting isn’t essential. If you are a maya fx guy then YES you do need to be a master of expessions, but max is pretty intuitive. Especially with box set 3 for pflow tools coming out. Yeah it can be boring, bobo works in the next room so if I need shit scripted I go to him
Hey - is this the thread where us Aussies organize a trip to the nearest convenient local? If so: Am in Chippendale. Who’s near the Rose on Cleveland St?
Gold Coaster here. Not a 3d pro but i do work in the industry as a data manager/tape op at Photon (before that was at channel 9) - Well at least I was till they ran out of work
Off to sweden next week and hopefully will be able to pick up work when I get back
very good, good to see all the ausies biggin it up.
didnt even know there was anything in canberra that did 3d
everyone keep the posts coming,
oh cheers for that reply allan
doggie - cool mate, two of my collegues just flew from canada down there to supervise a miniature shoot with you guys for a film. I might be stopping by when I get back to AU…
How many people has photon got these days? they go up and down so much it’s impossible to keep track of them.
James there’s uh two of my mates at weta both started at some crappy place in canberra, can’t remember it’s name anymore. But there’s at least one post house there
Hi Alan
Theres heaps of people working in miniatures atm with the superman project but on the digital side there is 2 people working on previs work for super. We just finished 2 WWE films which employed alot of people in 2d/3d but because photon only relies on movie work and not advertisement the work flow isnt constant - which is why I’m sitting on my arse
I think I will be hitting the brissy production houses to try and find somthing abit more stable. Hope Canada is treating you well
hi people,
its good to know that aussies are now becoming more and more active in cg, animations, films and etc. its about time that we put australia on the map of the world as one of the quality place to produce good movies. mel gibson demonstrated that it can be done; the last movie he made was very powerful “passion of the christ” the americans admired his professionalism that despite objections from all sorts of people he still manage to calm down and made the film phenomenal. it wasnt even in english yet it was good in terms of artistry and cinematograhy as to why people appreciated his work.
i might do my own movie production someday and its definitely going to be made inside australia, right now i’m here overseas.
There’s Eye Candy Animation:

And Silicon Gateway:

Both of them used only 3ds Max last time I heard (didn’t want Maya people). Another post production place I only recently discovered, is now doing CG as well:
Bearcage Productions:
http://www.bearcage.com.au/
Those are the only three I know of!
EDIT: Holy moly I found another one!
PCEZ Computers:

Haha, I might as well start one myself and make it a 4-some.
This is probably tantamount to putting Condobolin on the map of Australia, but here goes:
I work for a company called Steam: Motion and Sound. We’ve recently done some “big screen” stuff for a few corporate videos - namely for Saachi & Saachi, and Westpac. We use Blender for most of our 3D stuff, although we’ve recently purchased a copy of Maya and plan to learn it soon. While I am a bit of a Blender-head, I have found that it is a program that does deliver the 3D elements I need with flying colours. I have used it for a Toon-shaded intro sequence for a disney morning TV program; A photo-real Greenday Packshot; even Moulin-Rouge type curtains for (and this is the real nail inthe coffin) “ahem” Carlotta’s King’s Cross show a couple of months ago. These curtains were projected on a 20 Meter by 4 meter screen, and looked so good, we got some decent work out of it.
Check us out at: www.steam.com.au
doggie2k, yeah canada’s going well - I head back to Brissy in a week which I’m looking forward to
mannix8, mel gibsons american just was brought up in aus, still I’d much rather have him represent us than russel crowe
I was joking before when I gave a profile of myself. But basically I’ve been working in LA the last few years at Blur Studios and DD mainly, on stuff like warhammer, In the Rough, Blade Trinity and other projects. I just helped set up the Sydney Frantic Films office, and have been working away on the big superman project the last 6 months. Meanwhile I’ve moved back up to Brisbane where I’m helping set up my own studio for fx, which I’m busy just finishing up a music video and have several other projects coming through the pipeline, whilst I’m still working away on super for Frantic…
btw blup are there still those P2P things going on? Do you have troy’s email address? there been any dlf meetings lately?
Speaking of drinks at the local, is anybody going to the Sydney AEAF in December? I am looking at getting an early bird student ticket and will be staying with some mates in Kingsford in the Eastern suburbs if anyone is up for a drink in the city. Early warning I know, but it would be good to get together with some other folks.
