Australian CG Artists

I intro’d myself before… But I am going to give a bit more detail this time…

I come from Dorrigo in Northern NSW. (its near Coffs Harbour for those of you who don’t know or between Sydney and Byron Bay for those of you that really don’t know)

I am currently unemployed - so I am looking for work or education that will genuinely improve my chances/skills (I like Brisbane as a place to live, I can stand Melbourne & Sydney). Any help on this one would be much appreciated.

I am software agnostic (If it gets the job done its good, I learn new software routinely). I have done some development work on wings3d.

my god, i missed this thread, looks like a winner,

bit of an intro i guess…

Been a member of cgtalk for a while (and yes its aussie - w00t w00t )
ive been at the last 3 aeaf held in melbourne,

i currently study at the CGC in South Melbourne, 3 months into the 3d cource, the cource is good itself, but i’d surgest getting ahold of those gnomon dvd’s and being active on cgtalk, (cgtalk is fantastic for this thing)

Anyhow, Im Big into Particle’s and SFX really. thats where’ i’d love to end up

Cheers

Hello!
I’m a Sydney artist, just started working in 3d a few months ago.

I want to get into character animation full time but I’m worried that the jobs arn’t as beautiful as i imagined them (no aussie equivilant of Pixar or blue sky for example, though i guess animal’s having a go).

Thinking about going freelance! but too scared to try!

Studied at MAD academy in Sydney and live in Sutherland.

LETS HAVE A BBQ!!! WOOT!

#225

kimasamune, send your reel to monkeylab (www.monkeylab.com.au), we might need freelance character animators for an upcoming job.

#226

this is for allan mckay.
ive watched your particle flow dvd, awesome stuff by the way.
but you say maya should be first choice. This shockes me since you obviously are a guru at pflow and afterburn in max. Which program do you prefer using for visual effects???
And is there really anything better to use than particle flow and afterburn for particle effects? like whats the maya particle setup like??

James Barnes. 2nd year student aie canberra. act

#227

now, all you assie vfx artists out there, heres my question
ive been looking around at the vfx joints in australia and most of the companies want working experiance in the industry. where is a good place to apply and start work???

#228

The best place is to start at home working on your reel, and targeting where you want to work, using the software they use then lots of hard work…and you may make the grade

think I started typing a reply and got side tracked yesterday…

erm anyway my preference is max although what I was saying is that in terms of working in AU it really pays off to know maya. 80% of all the bigger studios there use maya, so you’re instantly more employable if you know it. Whether you use it as your main package or not is another thing, but being able to function day to day as an operator in maya does tend to help.

Aus is weird when it comes to getting your foot in the door. It seems when suddenly some big movie pops up, they’re hiring and YOU MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE… of course where the hell do you get experience? : )

Sydney’s the place to be for film/post production/tv commercials.
Ambience always was a great place to get your feet wet, although it seems in the last few years they’ve been taking advantage of people like that. and from what I hear they’re not really around anymore, as it seems every studios buying all the other ones out right now…
Plastic wax I hear’s another one, although… I hear they sometimes ‘forget’ to pay people, so avoid that one if you can. hopefully frantic Australia will be set up someday and we can start hiring everyone

anyone here from brisbane?

#230

In Canberra at AIE, but have lived in Brisbane for 5 years. As such I am routinely referred to as a Queenslander even though I was born, raised and did my first study in NSW. The stigma . . . In any event, QLD went down in Origin this year, so balance was returned to the multiverse.

James, I am 1st year AIE and am looking at places that hire etc. There seem to be quite a number of post houses around the traps. Also check out theDLF(Digital Labourers Federation?) website and mailing list. A lot of crap but tonnes of jobs listed. Also make sure to check government grants/scholarships etc. I know that NSW has a scholarship/internship program for vfx

missing aus  stuck in canada for another 4 and a bit weeks.

Hopefully will be doing some touring for discreet soon doing the ol promo stuff talking about max and effects etc. so should be cool to catch up with some of the industry peeps around syd and melbourne. Iloura are doing pretty well right now, working on some nice big projects.

#232

I’m from brissie! Damn tough place to get studio experience tho.
get by on doing corporate animations, but it doesnt seem to count as experience to the studios :frowning:

#233

cheers for that post allan and matt. ive been looking round a bit at www.deneroff.com/
I dont know if it shows every vfx joint in the world but it literally has thousands of companies listed and the websites. good site.
umm so thanks for the advice. U guys both queenslanders? damn toads.
oh and matt what days do you do cert 4?
i do mon to wed

#234

Hey,
I’m from melbourne, and I use lightwave, maya and softimage. Maya and softimage i just use for animating. I studied 3d back in 2001 but due to my bad/limited education, I find it dificult understand what you need to do techniqually to make a short. I think I just need to cut off my social life and really study hard.
Also I hope to go back to school next year, and was looking at aftrs, but it seems like you need experience for the digital media course. Can someone please shed some light on that for me?

Cheers

PS. I think a meet up would be great aswell, as I have yet to meet anyone who is into 3d film making as I am, appart from my old school mates

#235

Yeah Brissie boy, sold my soul and moved to hollywood
Aus’s industry isn’t ‘too bad’ I just moved back to Aus about 7 months ago, been missing it too much. but been stuck down in Sydney on the set for superman, now in Canada for a few more weeks then back to AU… I miss bundy rum more than anything right now : )

#236

The Wax have been consistent for me, so I’d have to disagree with you here Allan

Pretty nifty bunch to work with too!

#237

I went to a place in melbourne called, the Institute for Design Entertainment and the Arts. (IDEA). http://ideaonline.com.au
Pretty easy to get into and they were quite good. They use Lightwave there

#238

does anyone know any good site for particle fx referance??, avis of real world particles??

#239

blup! So you’re down in Sydney now dude? Great to hear.
Sounds like we’re going to be ramping up a bit at Frantic in Sydney soon…

Yeah I’ve heard mixed stuff about pwax, originally it was all bad stuff, but sounds like they’ve gotten better

Cool mate, how’s Sydney treating you?

-Allan

RE: Real world stuff - check out artbeats, they have lots of chaos stuff etc.
Other than that altavista has a video search. I tend to rip a lot of DVD’s of just day to day stuff from rain in water to objects dropping on the ground, whatever as they’re all good reference to stuff you might be trying to simulate. Having to do a giant photoreal splash right now which I’m having to reference.

James: I am in the Wed/Thursday class, and I am NOT a Queenslander!

Allan: For God’s sake man! You have the world of fine spirits at your fingertips and you choose to drink Bundy?!?! And here I was thinking you were a cool guy . . . such a shame to see talent wasted like that.
