Australian CG Artists

Don’t know about UWA and Curtin but ECU has two 3D uniits. One in Lightwave and the other in Max. I too am dissapointed there are no 3D/VFX courses.

#309

hey y’all,

Whats the state of CG in oz at the moment? Specifically melb? I left in a huff a 4 years ago and now I hear things have improved. Is this true?

#310

Melb specifically, things are turning up… compared to 4 years ago definately! It’s still not easy to find a secure job (espeically in the games industry), but things are getting better.

Hey bristow, I was a Swinburne grad as well!

#311
pssst.. can you fill me in where? i'm missing out on this turnaround, and want in! :)

#312

Heh. It’s more that the industry is becoming stronger in Melbourne. That doesn’t mean extra jobs though unfortunately!
The one thing that has surprised me (and I won’t name names) is the amount of game companies shafting artists out of pay, either through not paying promised overtime/bonuses, or contracting them at a lower rate than they originally agreed on. It’s rather disappointing.

#313

I’ve heard of one or two guys who has gone to melbourne recently for work. After so many years of folks leaving to look for opportunities, myself included, it would be nice to think that the trend has been reversed !

#314

… in Melbourne. Coffee is overrated

#315

Central Tafe has a year long Advanced Diploma 3D Course but they use Maya.

#316

I would hope so, I too know someone about to move from Sydney to Melbourne for a game dev job!

hey guys i’m a student in Sydney. www.eagle4.net i use 3d studio max

i hear you all complaining about your courses. but i can honestly say i got scewed. i am studying at AIT in Sydney. they told me they offered a 3d course. i showed them some of my 3d work, telling them i want to get into 3d modeling as a job. they offer me a partial scholorship, still expensive, but not as bad. now when i get into my course it turns out 3d is only a small part of their diploma course. oh and when i showed my work to the 3d teacher he said just form seeing that i could be exempt frm the whole course. as it turns out. i actually know more than my teacher. and thats from free tutorials on the net.

so yeah. i’m not too happy…

anyway its good to meet more aussies who are interested in 3D.

i am wanting to do games, but particles really intrest me… are there many jobs doing particles?
i know Allan Mckay does all that kind of thing.

Hey everyone!

Being born in Hobart and grown-up in Germany (since I was four years old) makes me some kind of Pseudo-Aussie, but I just hope for your acceptance anyway.

I’m planning to move back to Australia in the next weeks/months to start a new life and (hopefully) a career as FX Animator. So my question is:
Do you think that the (temporary) distance is fatal for applying and I should move to Australia BEFORE job-hunting?

This may be a dumb question, but it really concerns me, since I’m now living with my parents (for free) and I obviously want to move to the city where I find work. The other way involves more expenses, difficulties and a lot of guessing, but maybe makes it easier getting hired by becoming a local.

 Any advice is greatly appreciated!

#321

Timewaste, what city are you looking to come to? or are you planning to go back to Hobart?

#322

Wow, that was the fastest reply ever, thanks!

My favourite cities would be Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Mostly because I think these
are the “hot spots” with the best opportunities. But since I love the country as a whole, the city is not really important.

#323

Well, kinda. I’m originally from Detroit.

You may have heard of me. Chances are I’ve been fired from a company you’ve worked for.

I’m now a borderline alcoholic thanks to McKay. I’m currently back in Sydney working at a little place called ProMotion Studios. Great place!

DJ,

Being fired from Animal is getting to be a badge of Honour in this industry. Although it took some serious effort to do it in such spectacular style!

If you want to work as an fx animator your best bet is probably Sydney. Its expensive and full of rude people who will gladly sell their soul to get one step ahead, you’ll love it !

Shops like Animal and RSP will happily respond to international applicants if they like your work. But generally it is a LOT easier if you are local !

#325

ive heard this several times before, but there are a few large studio’s in melbourne, just seems to be more jobs in sydney.

what happened at animal ? o.O
