artifacts when sculpting with stencils

I get a lot of artifacts when I sculpt using stencil images. I’ve tried converting them to 16-bit and blurring slightly but I still get this:

Any ideas how to prevent this?

use true 32bit stencils…

Remember that stencils are a certain size, so if you over size them you will get pixelisation in the same was as blowing up an image will.

ya, it’s not pixellation. I think after looking at the wireframe overlay, that it’s areas where the sculpting has pinched and stretched the quads. There’s not much I can do about that without retopologizing the base mesh but smoothing seems to help.
