Are you using trackball rotation?

#1

hi !

I’ve been using modo for few weeks now and i must say that i fall in love for it:love:

i’m a max/maya user and i’m a bit confused with the trackball rotation (and yes, i now how to diactive it:) )
i want to know, once you get used to it, is it better for modeling?. what do you (you people who use it) think of this mode, what are the advantage and the downside of it?

please share your thoughts about it.

thanx :bounce:

Try Tackball Rotation if you’re using a tablet, feels great.

Trackball’s great even without a tablet - just be sure to use the left mouse button/alt/shift/ctrl combos instead of the icons in the top right corner - I got into the habit of using them through LightWave but they seem to behave differently to just “hauling” in the display in modo…

I love trackball rotation. It’s like holding the model in your hands… you can observe it from every angle you want you are not limited. If you want to reset the y? axis you can do it with the “viewport.rectify” command.

For me the advantages are that when I’m working on a model I can get right in to the nooks and crannies. It’s like Rigley said it just like holding it in your hand. you can view it form any where. The disadvantages are that you can become disoriented or loose perspective. There have been times when working in wire frame mode that my brain starts to invert the window in the z-axis. But this is easily fixed in modo by hitting the “A” and the “ctrl A” (hey I’m going to make a macro) this will center full screen and reset orientation. Plus having the Axis widget down in the corner helps a lot.

I’ve loved the trackball rotation for years… (I also use it in Lightwave)

If it weren’t for the fact that you can ROLL the camera by alt-dragging near the very border of the window, I’d probably have hated it.
