Archviz: Victorian Murder Scene WIP

#1

Here’s a few WIPs of an ongoing reconstruction project. The aim is to create a London square as it was in 1888 using maps & trade directories of the period, crime scene sketches and the few 20th C. photos that are known to survive. A 3d puzzle, if you like. So far, a couple of buildings are are finished or getting there.

The square’s only claim to fame was that on a late September night of that year somebody chose the spot to carry out some ad-hoc surgery and thus it became notorious as a Jack the Ripper murder scene.

I’m trying to keep the poly count low enough for a walkthrough, so usually normal maps are used instead of SPD and so on (there’s looooots of brick and cobble). The aim is to create day/night versions and the hardest part will be to simulate the night’s lighting conditions (IES data for gas-lights, anyone? ;))

South view: a chemical goods warehouse and backs of houses (currently a stand-in for the fence). Plain vanilla lighting.

North view: A tea warehouse:

A few shots of the same:

First night-lighting test, showing an entry to the square:

Thanks for looking. C & C welcome.

Thanks to the huge number of responses to this thread, I just have to post another one
I suppose that I have to create a different cobble/SPD texture for these low camera angles to counter the moiré…Any ideas as to best anti-moiré strategy?

Hey Jake…

A promising project as I can see… that will be interesting certainly you show us some photos of the existing one, you certainly have some references of this time, not ?

In any case, that seem well started… just that these rendering appears a bit dark… I can’t see perfectly the details…

About the “moiré” ? are you french ?
That seem come with the paving… there’s maybe 2 solutions 2 prevent that… with this kind of camera framing, less bump and depth of field can arrange that…

Do you planed to do more buildings ? how much ?

While waiting, good courage for the next steps

Thanks guys for your feedback.

Lemog,

Here are some of my references (combined for convenience). As to the darkness, it may be your monitor’s gamma setting (or, god forbid, mine ;))

Thanks for your moiré tip (I’m not French, but I don’t know any other word for it  ) I think that by having a different texture version for low angles does the trick.

It is my intention to do the buildings that surround or are visible to the square and line its entrances. For the peripheral buildings, it is sufficient to use plain elevation models. The challenge is, of course, to keep it accurate and, in cases where there is no drawings/photos, do the best job you can from textual descriptions (old newspapers etc).

Cheers,

Jake

Heh…finished this some time ago. A few smaller shots before I get posting the others (and my head around the portfolio/submission thing…

#9

looking good…I like your final night shot.

another tip for the moiré is to use texture filtering, that should clean it up nicely

Nice stuff indeed! Great modelling and really excellent atmosphere

#11

well I sure as hell wouldnt go down there. The alleyway reminds me of the one in V for Vendetta, but I think that there could be som more atmospheric fog. Looking forward to the updates

That’s really fantastic. There’s something odd about the lamp lighting. Other than that no crits.

#13

incredible! compliment for the constancy,
great work

AFAIK moiré is the correct term for the problem that you encounter with a repetative patter at certain angles.

Thanks for your comments & tips, everybody!

As the project was finished/delivered some time ago, I’ll upload some more wips etc. in the finished pics thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=415690

Cheers again,
