Architecture: Facial Architect

This was a school art project that I “rushed” in three days to meet the deadline.

Okay, I know multiple images might confuse people, so keep in mind the image captioned with “main image” is the primary focus; the 5 "closeup"s serve as a auxiliary understanding of the “sculpture.” These 6 images, together, count as one piece (some modern art are composed of multiple pieces, eg. one painting hanging from the corner of another).

Communicating theme(s): I found that good/great art doesn’t have to always communicate a thing transparently clear. Some good art is profound, abstract and requires a lot more time and thinking to appreciate it; this is a direction I tried with this piece, but do you think I’m getting there?

I also wrote an artist statement, but it’s too long-so here’s a summary:
(Don’t read this, if you prefer to interpret the images freely by itself)
Beginning: I combined architecture and body language research. I practiced using the “image development strategy” called metamorphosis.

Research: Body language (kinesics) research was mainly based on The Naked Face by Lilaan Young and other psychology books. I used a simple arch formation as the architectural element. And the stone heads turn out to be like the stonehenge in Easter Island, Chile, so I researched on the art there as well.

Heads: there are nine heads total. The heads on either side are identical; only the top head is unique. Each has a certain facial expression of a personality it tries to convey. Each one, with their relative position up the arch, should contribute to the theme in an abstract way–which I won’t reveal yet–a statement on sociey.

I think the faces themselves are pretty good, the emotions are clear and the style is nice, but the whole work of art does not invoke too much in me.

But that might have to do with the picture of the whole construction, it’s very small and i can’t see details very well. I like the design and when it would be a work of art somewhere in a museum i would check it out, because it looks interesting enough as a whole. So i would work on the render of the whole statue, post some bigger pics and play a bit with the light and the colors.

The idea of the heads supporting one big smiling head makes me think it’s about that most people are poor middle-class and are in some way supporting rich/powerful people also if they don’t aim to do that. Not sure if that’s what you wanted to say but that’s was my first thought when i looked at it knowing you want to say something about the society nowadays.

In short, i think it’s a good concept it just needs some tuning :slight_smile:

when i click on the link to the imagestation website, i get to a page which explains what photoalbums are and ask me to sign up and get my own album :s
it seems the invite only works for the smaller pictures gallery.

maybe you can host the big pic somewhere else?

hmm, well the message is a bit too esoteric for me. shrug part of conveying messages is to understand the symbolic language in use. I think my understanding of totems is a bit different as well, cause I THINK the message is about people in some way, and I usually think of totems in terms of architypes, magic, and shamanic belief systems.

what message are you trying to convey?

Drakaran, I think jawine’s interpretation (3rd post down) is similar to how I think of the massage myself: quote “The idea of the heads supporting one big smiling head makes me think it’s about that most people are poor middle-class and are in some way supporting rich/powerful people…”

But I didn’t start by using the ancient culture of whoever made the totems; instead I “noticed” that my initial sketeches looked like famous stonehenges i saw on TV.
Yep, I researched, but didn’t take much time delving into the culture. Belief systems would be an interesting way to view it…I haven’t thought about that, but tell me what new ideas you see.
