"The Aqsis team has been very hard at work giving the renderer a reboot of sorts, with the building of the new core and all, of which has not really been seen in the public eye…until now. Well, almost.
Leon Atkinson i[/i] will be at BlenderCon this year and will be showing off some of the latest exciting developments. Yes, showing it off on screen for everyone to witness because there is no way to fully explain the details in words, the Aqsis team reports a demo for the conference is under development, it is being prepared specifically for BlenderCon to announce the new plans for Aqsis and to show how beneficial they could be to Blender users.

The very core of Aqsis is being re-engineered with a focus on speed, it is at the prototype stage now, but is functional enough to form the basis of the BCon demo. There also will be interface changes, the migration away from FLTK to QT4 for instance, which is actually pretty neat since a lot of the pipeline tools are already in QT4 as well, or in the process of switching. Other changes like multithreading for instance are a very recent addition to the new core.

They are preparing a more detailed press release for after the conference, so keep your eyes open for that.

This also coincides with a point release, Aqsis 1.6.1 which will mainly be a bug fix release…"

If you happen to be in Amsterdam this weekend, try to stop in and check out the demo.

Sadly this “press release” did not work out the way we wanted. Despite sending an extensive article to Blendernation the story was never released there, which was something we were counting on (never count on the news to cooperate) however this did generate traffic (over 1000 hits for the single post) and a few people did want to be there for it.

We just got word that Leon’s session was overrun by the other presentations, which gave him 5 minutes which was not enough time to demo it. So he made an announcement that if anyone was interested to see him personally.

Lesson learned, no matter how bad you want to pull off a “leak” or media release trying to build up something, it can backfire and not go as planned at all. Ah well. Life goes on.

The Aqsis devs will be posting information on the website at some point, the whole purpose of the release was to show off that the guys have built a tool.

This tool is an interactive viewer of RIB, sort of like the prototype for a potential relighting tool of sorts, just different than Lpics, Lightspeed or RenderAnts. Take for example a simple cube rendering took 0.25 ms, according to testing results. The very core of Aqsis is going to be very fast now as well, the developmental core that is which won’t be merged into the main source for a few months. This is why we tried to make it a surprise, it’s impressive work.

THIS is what the fuss was all about for BlenderCon this year.

Sounds interesting with the conference though, wish I could have been there. Are these Blender conferences open for the public?
Not much info about things like that on Blender.com

Well yes but like any other conference (mainly to cover the cost of renting the space) there is the need to buy a ticket, though it is a lot less than SIGGRAPH.
I wish I could have gone, was supposed to be a presenter but had to back out because of family concerns (not to mention trying to get a plane ticket cheap was not possible at the last moment).
Funny you say that about the Blender site, seems Andrew Price was also talking about similar issues at the conference, namely the website.

My main reason was to present my paper there, did not happen but anyone can read it : http://www.mediafire.com/file/lwl393m93qox5gh/BtoR_Building_Production_Pipeline.pdf
