April 2015 - Roell Wahle

Hi guys,

First post here;)
I want to improve my matte painting skills so I thought I give it a try.
I hope you can help me with some tips etc!

The basic idea is to create a old “industrial” London look similar like this:

This is my first WIP:

Making some progress:)

Hey Roell, The texturing looks really good already! I think you can show more of the exhaust pipes and or add more chimneys on the buildings to create something like your ref! Also would love to see a version where you add the sun / lensflare more to the right out of the canvas but yet visible. Its too distraction I feel like plus your shadows are saying light is coming more from the right top. Love the sky btw, really nice texturing there too. The image looks very cool!

He Bo,

Thanks for your reaction. I’ll keep it in mind and change it later on!

My WIP for now:

I’m trying to go for a more sombre look. But maybe i’m pushing it to hard. Any tips?

Hey RoellWahle,
Looking good! Although the birds & sun are nice in your latest…I think I prefer the previous one. Something about the glowing windows I don’t care for.
It’s like my eye was drawn to all the small lights on the building on the right.
Whereas the previous image you posted just has a good look throughout…plus I like your slightly brighter sky with the sillouettes of the buildings.
It makes sense that there would be lights in a modern city but just thought I’d let you know which one I like best.
The lighting in your first post is very nice too…although it looks like a nuclear missile was just launched at the city.
I like the darker shadows under the shed in your latest version too. the front face on the one I like seems a little bright especially with the dark shadows on the lower left bricks.
The last thing that stands out to me is the red thing in the middle which overlaps with some objects in the distance.
I find my eye is drawn to the red pole then the white object above it (which is actually in the distance…not on top of the red pole). Plus I don’t really know what the red pole is…replacing it with a rusty pipe then removing the horizontal red pipe & the 2 white objects in front of the red brick building might help.
I look forward to seeing what you do next!!

Looks awesome RoellWahle,
I was really hoping to work on this matte painting contest myself…would love to get more experience with this sort of thing. Although I was swamped with work this month.
Hopefully I’ll make time for one of the upcoming DMP contests.
