April 2015 - Mario Galardo

I’m a CG challenge noob!

I only found out about it last night but I still would like to give it a shot.

I know, only a day and a half to go, still here’s what I got so far.

Here’s a rough layout concept and a first version wip. (Doh! I’m such a noob when it comes to posting stuff I don’t even know how to display an image in a thread. Hope this works. If not; please let me know how to do it. Thanks.)

I’ll try to complete by tomorrow afternoon. If not, well there’s always next month’s.

Hey Mario,

The image isn’t showing up, it only links to your cg profile. The best way to go about uploading images is to go through an image hosting service, like imgur, and then link to it in the forums.

Hope this helps

Okay. Super thanks. I’ll get on it asap.

Cheers.

Hi guys,

Here’s another wip.

http://i.imgur.com/6CWerhB.jpg

Somewhat satisfied with the composition, I’m now building the mid-ground and foreground. I’ve added volumetric lighting and a flare but I’m not quite sure how it’ll all come together in the end. I might add crepuscular rays to make it “magical”. Are we allowed to put in some birds? 'Be nice.

I welcome everyone’s feedback.

More soon.

Cheers!

Here’s my wip of the morning.

It’s coming along, although I wasn’t too sure if in the end it would be too futuristic as temptation settled in.

I’m sort of happy with the piece right now but there’s so much work on details with the time left, some buildings aren’t even painted yet.

Anyway, that’s what I get for entering last minute. lol

Another wip.

I’m starting to like it.

Much more details to add. We’ll see with the time I have. (3 year old daughter requires much of my time! lol)

No feedback so far. Would’ve liked some of you pros’ input.

Cheers!

Hi Mario, I like where this one is going, it has a very clean and fresh atmosphere and looks like what I wish a modern city could be.

You have broken up the scene quite well using the large greenhouse and the treeline, and the use of natural materials such as the wood for the main arch is also a nice touch, which synergises well with the abundance of plant life.

A few things I noticed were the windows in FG left, seems a little bright for being in that much shade, I find a good trick is to create a desaturation adjustment layer to turn on when you need to check values without being distracted by colour.

Also the flower garden in the FG - is a great touch, but using diffuse light reference is very difficult for this kind of harsh late afternoon sun direction where there are long dark shadows. I think you may be better off using reference with shadows for this.

Those two trees FG right, I like their placement and how you have used them to break up the flat mid ground area, but the textures themselves seem a little oddly warped.

Lastly, the repeating textures on the water tanks stood out a bit to me, you could just paint in a few minor details to create some instant variation.

Overall, nice work on this one, I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks for your comments Drewsen. I will def try to work on all of them.

I was indeed aware of the repeated+warpy textures. I’m kinda keeping those for the end but you’ll see in the image I’m posting, I’ve started playing with them.

I’m also going to add in details like tools and stuff inside the cabin.

Hope you enjoy this wip.
