Applying an Image to plane.... help

Hey, I apologize upfront for the very “noob” question. I am trying to accomplish building a scene but cannot figure out how to apply an Image to a plane.

Now before you tell me to hit “M” and find the bitmap and apply it… its not exactly working as easy as that… or maybe Im just that ignorant.

I am trying to first crop an image and then apply it as a texture to a 2m x 2m plane.

Any direction or help would be most appreciated. Also, I am resorting to posting because I have checked tutorials, FAQ, and even searched for an IRC chat to find help… with no luck as of yet…
