I never got to try mirai. but i watched time lapse video of bay raitt modeling again last night. when he right clicks. there is like 3 windows that open. i was wondering if wings 3d, has better tools? along those lines is what i was hoping to find out. or is it missign a lot of poly modeling tools?
Anyone tell me the modeling difference with Mirai, compared to wings3d?

Wings started out as a Nendo clone, which is a very watered down version of Mirai. It has since grown into quite the Mirai clone. It has most of Mirai’s features, with some additional innovations. If I didn’t have Mirai, I’d probably use Wings to compliment Maya. I don’t feel that Wings has quite the robust feel that Mirai has, but it is getting close.
I’m quite biased towards Mirai, though, because I have been using it in it’s various incarnations for 11 years, and I’m quite at home with the workflow. Most people might be surprised if they knew how extensively Mirai has been used at prolific modeling studios and has been used for high profile projects. Mirai also has killer blendshape capabilities that I use extensively for UV application.
Having said all that, there are some plugins from Clacos (see link to his site from the Wings site) that currently work only with older versions of Wings. I hope that these plugins, (notablly Draw Poly and Slide) find their way into Wings eventually. If these make it in, I could see myself using Wings as my primary modeling tool.
Another benefit of Wings is that there is shortcut configurability that Mirai lacks. Given the fact that Wings is free, you can’t beat it!
I’m still hoping that Mirai will emerge with version 1.5 that has been due “any time now” for a couple years.
I watch the development of Wings with a lot of interest.
Hope that helps.

…Mirai a full suite though? Modeling, Bone/jointing, UV Mapping, Rendering, and Animation?
I was under the impression that it was a complete package.
Isn’t Mirai what SQUARESOFT uses? FINAL FANTASY?, but of course in their movie they went with Maya!
On day i’m going to have to sign up for their demo.

i would say WONT is the right word. demos = obsolete. unless some miracle of goodness happens and a 1.5 IS released ( which i am very skeptical it will) then a demo might become available. the only way you will be able to demo it is to watch the MK videos. or buy a copy for 500$. but dont waste your money on it.
it is an EXCELLENT package with the best modeling money can buy etc. etc., but it is getting WAY out of date. thats why most ppl are selling their copies and getting the next best thing, wings and maya/lw (or your package of choice).
so dont get your hopes up. its better to just expect not to get the demo, so if the website comes back up and they release 1.5 and you get a demo, you will be about x2 happier.
just watch the vids. its better that way

I thought it was upward of 6 grand!
And I had thought that they mailed demo cds out. Every once in a while I catch there website when it is up, but it has been a while.
