The background:
I’ve started learning Wings (and the whole box / subdivision modeling thing) and have come up against this problem. I’m trying to be good and avoid ngons in my finished models (eventually I’d like to learn animation). But I do like the flexibility of using ngons while working on the model (as I re-flow loops and such) - then attempt to get rid of them all before taking the model into either Blender or C4D (CE+) for placing in a scene and rendering.
If I accidentally miss an ngon - when it goes into Blender or C4D (export as .obj) those apps will automatically ‘fix’ the ngons … but their fix is often less than optimal. I’d rather fix them myself in Wings before I take the model into another app. I know that I can tell Wings to tessellate model … but I’d often rather do it myself so that I have better control over what happens (ie. adjust other faces in addition to just the ngon face so as to re-connect loops, etc)
The question:
Is there any way to have Wings show (maybe highlight or select) any ngon faces for me so that I can find them easier?
I hate finding them after I’ve brought them into another app, as if I’ve done any work placing or manipulating the model there, I end up having to re-do it because I’ll fix the wings model and bring it back in. To avoid accidentally having any ngons, right now I’ll select the whole model (in Wings), switch to face mode, look at the status line to see how many polygons. Then tessellate-quadrangulate, to see if the poly count changes. This at least lets me know I have ngons somewhere, but then I have to find them myself.
It would be helpful if there was some way to automatically find them so that I don’t have to hunt for them. (Sometimes they’re hard to see if they’ re a result of a split edge as the points lie on the same line, so they might look like quads at a quick glance.)
I hope my rambling is clear.
Thanks.
