I need to do some previz smoke/dust effects for this shot I am working on (maya 2014), it has to render in viewport 2. Is there any way I can convert a particle sprite to something that would display in viewport 2?

Replace every particle with a textured polyplane using the particle Instancer. These shoukd always orient to the camera.
I’m not sure if viewport 2 can handle the instancer, but you could then bake the instancer to geometry. There are a few free melscripts on creativecrash.com that also bake rgbpp, incandescence and opacity, but depending on your number of particles it might get rather slow…
