Any Avid Blender Useres here?

I know less than jack about blender - Interface scared me more than the boogy man - but I’d like to give it another go.

What I want to do is take my character models over from wings3d to blender to try an bone/animate them. I have the latest release (2.28a) but I cant seem to find an import option?

I guess I need a plugin then? Where? And do I have to have Python installed? And where does the Plugin go?

If the above two can be answered, then will the plugin give visual indication that it is there (ie will an import option show up in the file menu? or Do I just open the file normally and it works out that it is the right file type?

i believe you have to export the wings file as a vrml (.wrl) and that should do it. i have not used blender since the last version but i believe they changed it to that extension.

I get an “error: Unknown file type” message when I try to open up the exported .wrl, .obj, .3ds - all no go!

I know people do this, but HOW!

I found a convert3ds.blend file and opend it, then tried to import the 3ds file, but it didn’t work.

I think theres a problem exporting vrml files to the newest blender but I think you can still export them to vers 2.25. although there might be some updated scripts for 2.28 the trouble is tracking down all this stuff. I suggest going to the blender forum and posting your question alot of them do use wings also. Appollox should be able to answer your questions. In the past I did get a model into blender 2.25 with vrml export not sure what wings version it was. there are some posts about installing python most of the old scripts seem to only work with older versions of blender. I read there was a new python out so theres probabbly some updated scripts.
If you find blender to hard to figure out you can try anim8or it’s pretty simple to build a skeleton and get it moving. or Art of Illusion haven’t tried animation in it but the program seems fairly easy to understand.

Try using the Append File command (Shift F1).

…seem to work for me!

For VRML, wings is version 2, blender is version 1?!

Plug-ins don’t seem to do anything…I just keep getting “error invalid selection!”

Scripts don’t seem to be working for me either. Same error message.

I checked the official forum, but it seems I’m alone in my fustration in the importing realm…unless I move back to release 2.23/2.25.

Anychance somebody could give me a step-by-step on how to import a file from wings to blender???

Some things I’m not sure of:

  • Do I have to have python installed to use scripts/plugins?
  • Where should the scripts plugins be stored?? Same as the .exe??

Thanx

And on Anim8or, I have a hell of a time moving around in that program. I may give Aztec a try.

It is possible:
First you can open up any VRML 1.0 file in all releases up to and including 2.28a. Simply do FILE–>OPEN and select & load the .wrl file.

You can also load lightwave (.obj) files. This takes a little more setup:

  1. Right click on http://www.zoo-logique.org/3D.Blender/scripts_python/obj_io_modif228.py and save it to any directory (your blender directory is a good choice).

  2. Download Python 2.2.3 from www.python.org (NOT 2.3!)

  3. In Windows: START–>Right click on My computer–> Properties–>Advanced–>Environment variables . Under system variables, click “NEW”. In Variable Name type: PYTHONPATH. In Value type: C:\PYTHON22;C:\PYTHON23\DLLS;C:\PYTHON22\LIB;C:\PYTHON22\LIB\LIB-TK

  4. With me so far? Now open blender 2.28. Make a text window and select “open…” Choose the Python script you downloaded. With the cursor in the window press “Alt-P”. You should get a dialog with import and export options.

I can attest that this works for me! Good Luck and Happy Blending:wavey:

  • I uninstalled Python 2.3
  • Installed python 2.23
  • Set enviormentaly values (system)
  • Reinstalled Blender 228a
  • Moved the Script to the location of blender.exe file
  • Opened Blender
  • Did a file open, and seleceted script

= Error: Unknown file type!

With Python 2.3, I didn’t get ther error, but the Alt-p would give me some “Clear Parent” option dialog.

I get the error message for any time of file open I do.

The only way that you could get a ¨Clear Parent¨ dialog is if you pressed Alt-P on a 3D window. To run a script you muss press Alt-P on a Text Window.

Apparently, Apollux, your correct!

I wasn’t in a “text” mode.

I’m use to the menu bar for your work area being at the top…not the bottom( which is what I changed to text mode).

I’d have never made it his far without everybodies help.

I was able to get my model in Blender from Wings, now that I know I can do that, I’ll start working on playing with the animation/rendering that can be done in Blender.

thanx everybody.

No problem bro!!

By the way, did you know that you can personalize where the menu and button bars are located? You can even decide no to have a bar at all.

Just right-click on the bar that you want to personalize and a pop-up dialog will show.

Till later :wavey:
