Animation Stills

#1

Hi All!

Just thought I’d post a few stills from my first 3D animated short. The short was an 1 minute max. assignment for school (I’ve just finished my first year of Animation at the Utrecht School of Arts). Subject and execution of the assignment were up to myself.
My goal was to make a sweet little story and I wanted to make it look like it was all painted in oilpant. Sadly, I failed miserably in both accounts. It’s kind of hard to bring a person to tears in just one minute and because I spent so much time on the art direction, I had only 4 days to do the actual animation and camera’s(3-4 weeks from script-2-screen). So all in all, it was a kinda crappy experience, because I didn’t reach any of my goals, but it was educational none the less. (and I passed the asignment, so…)
But anyways; here are the stills.

I can’t see anything.

Did you link your pictures?

Hi. I’d already taken them down again, cause I needed some webspace and nobody really took interest in the thread, so…
But ey, I’ve uploaded them again.

Cheers,

it looks cool. Reminds me of stewart little a lot. I like the color and stuff, but the ss’s aren’t very clear (blurry). But yea, its coo. Looks like a lot of work.

That’s a great start man keep going.

Whoohoo! Comments!

@m0og0o: yeah, I know they look a bit blurry, but at my school we have to show all of our work on DV-tapes. If you render something really sharp, the DV freaks out and if you look at it on a TV, the image gets all shivery and hard to look at. Same thing goes for the colours; you’ve got to make them ‘broadcast-safe.’

@Snej: Thanks for the comments. I actually made it in about three weeks, so yeah… it was a lot of work. Especially considering Animation was just one of my many classes. This was why I was kinda bummed out with the result; I had worked on it so hard and the result was very depressing. I really wish I had more time for the actual animating of the characters and that my teachers weren’t so strickt with about the screentime(we had to keep it under a minute). The animation does have it’s moments but a lot of things look rushed or look played too quickly.
I don’t have a version I can put online right now. I’d have to render it again in AfterFX and find some webspace… Hmps… Well, if there are a lot of people who want to see it, I’ll see what I can do. Otherwise, you’d just have to trust me when I say it plain sucks

I think the key is to focus on certain aspects when making a reel. Don’t try and do the whole shabang for a collage project there will never be enough time. I learned this the hard way and ended up with something too long and with too much to do and ended up finishing only half of it which was really dissapointing. The next year I focused my energy on my animation and ended up with something I was happy with. I still think I can do better but that’s what it’s all about practice. That’s just my experiance I don’t know if it’s of any help or even valadit just came to mind.

Keep working on things and don’t stop the stills look good.

You’re absolutely right. Our teachers always warn us about these things, but I’m kinda stubborn about that stuff(or so I’ve been told). Here at the HKU it’s always like: -The narration comes first, then the animational skills and finally the esthetic design. Which I guess is a good way to do things, but I think it’s a shame there’s simply no time for the design part. The biggest part of your time is supposed to go to storyboarding and the actual animation. For this animation I had to make two character models(model, rig, texture animate), water(model and animate), a few leafs(model, texture, rig and animate), a ground surface for the collision(only model), some 25 background paintings, lighting, camera set-up and movement and a little post(compositing and such). It was my choice to do this; I also could have just made a black-and-white penscil animation.

But I guess I just wanted to learn as much as I could this year. At the HKU we focus on all forms of animation, such as 2D, 3D, puppet, clay, cut-out, pixelation…everything really. And this is what I like about it I guess. All asignments I’ve done this year, were completely different from onanother, in style and in technique. After I had finished this thing, I couldn’t even look at Maya. I’m really glad I could just work in any discipline I wanted after this.

But in the end, I think it’s good to always want more. It’s nice to dream, isn’t it?

At the school I went to it was pre production stuff and 3D that was all no other mediums. I found that to be unfortunate. I’ve been spending most of my time lately laerning more on the 2D end of things. I am looking forward to getting into another project in 3D though. I think time spent in a technicle school is best spent learning and honning your skills there always time to create your masterpiece later.
