Animation Master > Wings 5pt patch problem

#1

Hey folks, I love Wings.
Absolutely love it.

I’d like to convert my model from Hash’s A:M to a poly friendly format.
When i export the model in .Obj and bring it into Wings, I notice all my patches are divided in half ( polygons )
When I delete some of the polygon edges, I get a nice smooth model. ( Are these now what are refered to as ‘quads’ ? )

The only problem that I have now is that when I meet up with a 5 pt. patch, I can’t select any of those edges inside the patch to delete them.

I brought the model into Cinema 4D and was able to delete the areas of the 5pt patch that I couldn’t get to in Wings…but…when I bring it back into Wings and begin deleting any other edges, the model disappears.

Any clue as to what I am doing wrong, or any tips on working with 5pt patches ?

Also, what are the blue areas of the mesh ? I assume they are areas that have the normals flipped the wrong way.
( I can hear it now " Read the manual dumbass"" )

Thanks !

each face comes in as a separate face. they are not connected. And since Wings needs a volume, it adds a face on the other side colored blue(the hole material)

do a cleanup command in object mode, which will weld the points together.

Thanks Joe.

I’m not seeing a lot on the topic of Wings over at the Hash forum. I guess I’m not doing a good search.

I’m trying to convert my A:M model into a clean mesh that doesn’t look like it is made of sharp crystal ( pointy polygons )

I am slowly reading through the Wings manual and trying to absorb as much of it as possible.

( I hate starting from scratch all over again. )

I’m assuming that a good mesh is one that is composed of segments (‘faces’ ) that are shaped like a 4pt. patch in A:M vs. faces that are divided into triangles.

( I’m converting these triangles to what I have seen refered to as ‘quads’…right ? )
To do so, what I have been doing is selecting edges and deleting them one by one so that I am left with quads.

Am I doing this the right way ? Is there an easier way to convert my pointy mesh to one that is made of quads ?

Please remind me again why that my entire model vanishes when I delete an edge. If the edge is connected ( welded ?? ) to the rest of the model and this is the reason, why doesn’t the rest of the model become selected ? It wasn’t doing this before that I deleted the point ( What is refered to as a "CP’ in A:M ) in the center of the 5pt patch that I mentioned before.

Should I just ‘throw in the towel’ and start the model over from scratch ?
I seems as though the model just needs to be cleaned up a bit. I’d really hate to just throw all those hours of modeling away.

Thanks !
