Animation advise needed

#1

Hello i’ve been working on a Cartwheel/Handspring what-ever you prefer to call it.
So far its only basic key frames set on liner tangent, but i’d like to know what you lot think i don’t want to spend ages tweeking it if the underlying animation dosn’t work. Especialy as my rig dosn’t like being turned upside down, cousing gimble lock problems.

I’ve taken refrence from Muybridge and “The Blues Brothers” (grate film  )

hey, the hand spring is a tricky movement to do, but i give you credit for trying to start off, but here is what i see myself for starters:

  1. the little run at the start needs to be adjusted in timing and leg positioning, it seems he is floating, you may need to study a run cycle to better foot placement. seems a little slow as well.

  2. i know you don’t have a lot of the animation started, but even as a rough animation, you really need to add movement into his back in that flip. such as when he putting his hands down on the ground, he is only bending by his hips which it should be more of the back bending down and a then hip rotation. the same goes for when he lands, there is no back movement and with that happening, his leg lands way to far forward which makes him appear he is floating again, so have the landing be closer to where his hands are on the ground.

  3. there is a lot of timing issues, so I strongly suggest going back and adjust your keyframes before adding any more motion. itwill only help you in the end.

  4. one of the larger issues I have is that the character lacks weight. he looks like he would fly away if a strong gust of wind would hit him.

  5. forgot to add, also when he lands, he doesn’t have any weight. his legs should bend for taking the shock of his body landing, right now he looks like the just landed with no gravity.

anways, that is just some of things i noticed and i hope i am not being to hard, but hey, it’s a critque right? I think with the right timing and some more movement for starts will greatly improve it and then add in more of the other rotations in the body to make it alot less robot like.

keep it up, and good luck
