animating snowboard snow spray

#1

Hi, I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to animate snow spray (the snow that flies into the air when a skier or snowboarder turns) I was thinking of using nParticles but don’t have much experience using them. Maby someone could recommend a good tutorial DVD for nParticles. Also here are some videos which show what I’m trying to create.

Thanks!

Lot’s of ways to do this but if you are not familiar with particles let me suggest an easy option.

Depending on how your snowboard is animating, you could attach a emitter to a curve or the object and key the emission when you need it. Maybe make it a volume if using an emitter or add a texture mask if using an object, and scale it to the rough size of your snowboard ‘edge’ and have the emitter pointing 45 degrees upwards and add some gravity and turbulence with a taste of conserve. You can make the groundplane a collision object. For the radius, add a radiusPP and make it something like radiusPP = rand(1);
Add a shader and some motion blur.

Done.

Thanks for your reply fatsumo, I tried to follow your directions but couldn’t get anything looking that great, as seen here.

but then I thought of a different approach. I just filled a container with a bunch of n particles then animated a snowboard going through all them. as seen here.

anyway I’m still not sure how to add a shader. Also another question…would n-particles be a good solution for shoveling snow or would soft bodies be better?
