Animating a hose that is connected to an object on each end
Ok now that’s just weird. I was going to make a request for just such a tutorial yesterday.
Thanks for all of the new tutorials Will, they are great.
Can anyone think of a way to attach one of the bones shown in this tutorial to another object in the scene?
AFAIK you can’t parent a bone to anything except it’s object or another bone in it’s object.
Also does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the hose from spinning on its axis?
I built a quad chain instead of a 2 pt poly chain and even though the chain doesn’t spin, the metalinked hose does spin on it’s axis.
What about parenting a null to the other object and setting the bone to follow the null using follower?
just a thought…

Can’t really recall right now, and I’ve been out for a beer or two.
But… there might be a way, there is a setting in the bones properties or something which says something like use bones on previous layer. Something like that.
That kind of works, but it’s going to take ALL bones of one object. There is no way to controll which bone(s) you want to use to drive another object. But if that is no problem, then select the object that doesn’t have any bones and click on Bones and hit p to bring up properties window. Use the dropdown menu at the top (Use Bones From Object).
If I just wanted a single bone from an hiearchy to drive another object, I would select that object, create a bone, apply Follower to it and set Follower to follow the desired bone. After that has been done, I would rest it so that it actually affects the geometry (otherwise it will probably rotate in screwed up way)
