Animating a group's transparency?

#1

Hi there,

is there any other way to animate a groups’ transparency other than through it’s materials in Blender 2.5? It would be pretty laborious if I had to set keyframes up for a group that had 20 materials on it.

eg if I wanted a car to fade in on a background whilst driving through the scene

you could render the car seperate and comp it back in with fade in,
or
you could drive all the alphas from one knob and just animate that i guess.

#3

hmm ok how do i setup drivers?

#4

well, the tutorial on this page actually is about creating a stereo camera rig,
but drivers are used to drive certain values so you can see how their set up there:

Thanks guys I’ll have to suss those out.

So with my apple example below if I want the outer slices to fade out to reveal the core, how do I do that because I think I’ve stuffed it up at the moment from my screenshot (especially since the slices shadow are rendering in the RenderLayer instead of the appleSlices layer).

#8

ok I’ve modified my setup a bit which is fading my slices but not the slices shadows, any reason why?

Ok, here’s a Blend that I think will help you figure this out. The thing that I think you are fighting is the light(s) which I believe you have on BOTH layers. You probably need to duplicate the light instead and put each one on each individual layer.

Frankly the behavior of render layers is quite confusing.

Wow those layers all over the place are confusing ie Scene, Render, Relations layers.

I guess I’ve been spoilt with 3DS Max and it’s approach seems a lot more straight forward but then again I’m sure all the layers allow for other funky things that I haven’t come across yet.

Thanks once again phil3d, you’ve been a great source of help once again!
