Aw, nobody has posted here…well, here is a little squirrel (I’m not quite sure whether he’d go here, or under concept art, there’s so many threads!) I’m very intrigued by the idea of a children’s storybook, with the characters being animals… I worked on him off and on at my last job (it got really slow there…). I first sketched him, then outlined him with pen, then coloured him with prismacolour markers. After that, I scanned him into the computer and gave him a nice gold/yellow background in Photoshop. As far as reference goes…well, there are a TON of squirrels in my backyard, I just watched them.

I LOVE this image! It reminds me of my favorite children’s book illustrator, Beatrix Potter, who did the Benjamin Bunny books, etc. ~ I am a huge fan of English Illustrators, as they have an unmistakable charm to them which I cannot pinpoint ~ at any rate, I think your animal illustrations are adorable, and I’d love to see more!

I love Beatrix Potter, too. I adored her books as a child…

Here is a horse’s eye. This was more me trying to experiment with blending colours in photoshop (blending is so tricky for me!), but I think it turned out to be a nice study of the horse’s facial structure, as well. My attempt at blending didn’t turn out half-bad, either (though it could definately still use some work).

You should consider participating in the Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE ~ it’s a great way to learn digital painting! What you ought to focus on is less color and more Black and White images when you first start ~ Color information is, believe it or not, not the most important thing to seeing form, but rather it is VALUE, or Black, White, and all the Grays in between which enable us to discern different forms and shapes.

I like this image, but I know you will benefit from the exercises, as will everyone else ~ so I hope you join us!

Ah, this takes me back, way back when i was just a wee pip squeak (about five years ago, lol), before I discovered the joys of the human form and face, all I painted was animals. This is the only one that was small enough to scan. Done in acrylic on illustration board, measures about 4" x 4". I’m particularly fond of the fur texture, though I’ve no idea how I did it.

hi everybody

it’s longtime i didn’t come here and I didn’t know about this forum section …
thanks to rebeccak for is greta lesson if i have time i try the skull shading …it’s my bad point…
so i wanted to show some of my animal drawings…( just try…)

i used a black prismacolor pencil and 6B pencil also…take about 2hours for each horse …
for both i use reference and trace the contour …the last horse i just reproduce from book…

and third draw make a lion femal…this one was more quick to do

I made a visit to the zoo a few days ago, and these are some of my best drawings that day. They’re not great, but since it was
1. my first time drawing animals
2. my first time quicksketching (most drawings are done in less than 30 seconds)
3. my first time drawing with pen
I’m pretty happy with them. I especially like the middle vulture. I feel I really nailed it there without using too many lines.

Great work, guys!!! Keep it up, it’s great to see these cool animal paintings and sketches! I used to do tons of animal drawings as a kid, I should definitely do more of them.

i think this one has many flaws in the skull and the chest, but i was not able to find good reference on the bone structure of horses.

The first image is an oldie from 1998 which I did on my first computer. I was into soft pastels at the time and that had something to do with how it turned out. The second image is more recent. It is a pencil sketch with a little bit of shadow added in my art program. The third is the unicorn sketch I did for my 2d project ‘Release of the Unicorn’. I added the tail later.

Here is one I did for my Aunt a couple of years ago. The photo of the baby deer is one she sent to me. The image bg is part digital part photo. The foreground is all digital as is the deer. Made in PSP and retouched in PS. I wanted the details to be soft with this image.

I really love the colors in this painting! The painting of the deer is, for lack of a better term, totally adorable!! The only thing is that I think some of the colors could be a bit desaturated, and some of the edges alternately sharpened or softened, for contrast.

wow, great work everyone!
My first pic is an oldie from about 2000 i think… i used graphite (spelling? :shrug: ,) pencils …probably 2H, F, and 3B.

the second picture is of a sealions skull that was sitting in the studio where i work. it took me about 45 minutes. i used a 6B and 3H mostly.

I particularly like your second piece, the ‘dead thing’, lol! Really beautiful shading technique, and I have a personal fondness for sepia~toned drawings. Great stuff, I hope you post more work!
