Anatomy Thread of Vilhelmina

#1

Hey guys!
I’ve been drawing and painting (primarily digitally) for nearly nine years now. But it’s been a little mechanical lately - I haven’t felt like I’ve improved as much as I used to, and I keep repeating the same patterns, making similar artistic (uncreative!) choices and BLAH.

NO MORE!

This ends now. Now is when I go back to basics: perspective, form, anatomy, colour theory… here I come!

These are some quick (10 minutes each-ish) environment thumbnails I did for a concept art class I’m taking.

I need to choose one to develop further for next week’s assignment, so if any of you have any favourite out of these that you think I should go with feel free to speak up.

This is a portrait I’ve been working on (from imagination) this afternoon. It’ll serve as a good reference of what my “starting point” is.

It’s still a WIP so the hair and some other areas are still quite rough - but it’s a very typical piece for me (and the most recent) so it will do for this purpose.

Some gesture drawings from today. All done in between thirty seconds and one minute.

This one had a 5 min 45 s time limit:

Hi, Vilhelmina!

I don’t understand how you draw from this “figure and gesture drawing tool”, it’s uncomfortable to switch between browser and photoshop all the time in such a shirt period, do you have 2 monitors?:slight_smile:

#6

Just one, but it’s sort of high resolution. I also have the browser and Painter windows up side by side, the image in the browser was resized automatically to fit my browser window (in Google Chrome, pretty sure most newer browsers would do that though).

You can always have the images on the screen and then draw on paper instead though. :slight_smile:

More gesture and figure drawings, these are from tonight.

First batch took 1 min each, second two took 5 min 45 s, last one took 11 min 30 s.

Hi Vilhelmina :slight_smile:

Hey,…nice job on these gesture studies…I espeally like the second from the bottom one posted…Nice broad, loose and flowing brushwork there…That’s the kind of sketch that makes for a good foundation/underpainting to build a nice finished painting upon…Captures the energy and essence of the gesture and model right from the get go…:thumbsup: :slight_smile:
Looking forward to seeing more of your studies in here, and the progress that’s sure to come with them…Great start to your sketchbook by the way…:thumbsup:

@ SpiritDreamer;
Thank you! Yeah I see what you mean - it’s definitely a lot easier to get a good visual feeling of something if you try to think in broad strokes and gestures more than lines. I can’t believe I’ve been thinking lines for so long - this makes so much more sense to my brain!

@ nosisme ;
Thank you so much! (: In fact, here’s another update!

These are from today. Six minutes, six minutes and eleven minutes respectively. Tried to think more in values and shapes than lines. Incidentally the first image is the same one that appeared yesterday, but I think I got a better hang of it today!

@ marowak;
Thank you! And yup these are some relevant goals! I actually find it more fun to draw again now than in a long time - simply because now I feel like I’m going somewhere!

On that note, these are some quick figure paintings from today;

Hi Vilhelmina,
Awesome thread. The last two on here are gorgeous. They really have a painterly feel to them. I think that your thread will definitely be one that I’ll enjoy watching. :thumbsup:

#14

Thank you, Splinter! I like the feel of the last two as well - I’m trying to get a better hang of it for my future work. :slight_smile:
