After the 2nd day on the first Bargue

I’ve also done a bunch of sketches of figures but really nothing interesting there to look at.

Cool studies razz.
How’s school btw?
Would love to hear more about the program. You know, what’s planned etc…
I see they are throwing Bargue right at ya already
Alenah, ah, yeah, I just thought it wouldn’t be nice to to be away for three months
With a little bit of struggle with uploading I can still manage it. Thanks!
Johan, thank you! It’s great here, though the method they teach is so new to me I feel like I’m just starting out in drawing! The first Bargue ir a very simple one, as you can tell. We should finish it next week. It’s done just to familiarize us with the process. The instructor is always around us right now, helping out, but later we’ll be doing more work on our own as we’ll now how things should be done. Really looking forward to starting a harder one
For figure drawing we’re being taught how to measure, what to measure first and so on, how to construct a gesture. Won’t be getting into tone until the last few weeks of the trimester, so it’s mostly gesture now and it’ll get more fun later. Starting life drawing next week, that’ll be great. And again, new to me. There will be a few lectures (in the first trimester) about anatomy and some about something else, can’t remember. Will be doing copies from the Bargue book of the figure drawings, focusing on the linework and, of course, gesture. Were drawing from a cast today as preparation for the life figure drawing and I found that really hard. Oh, so much to learn.
There are more classes in the evenings. Portrait drawing and fast figure drawing (doing only gestures I guess). If I remember correctly you must have four Bargues finished in order to join the portrait drawing class, but gesture one doesn’t require that. Also, we’ll watch art related documentary movies on Thursdays. But if anyone wants they can continue working on their Bargue in the evenings (and I will on my second one, yay!). But evenings are optional and you have to pay a few euros for the two classes I’ve mentioned (or just the one, I don’t remember again).
By the way, every student is amazingly nice here, I love the atmosphere
Well, yeah, will learn a lot in the trimester I’ll be staying here. After that I’m going home and hopefully will be able to continue the studies on my own. Damn expensive…
Ok, until you got tired of reading, I’ll stop.
Third day

awesome stuff razz - the Barque’s going great… we started on the simplest ones first - I’m on my 3rd images some profiles at the mo… I guess this one’s still way ahead heheh
Looking forward to more
Oh man it sounds like you are in a wonderful environment!
Must be quite stimulating and inspiring.
Well if anyone deserves it, it’s you
Have fun at the life drawing sessions…
One small tip if I may: try not to set your expectations too high to avoid any disappointment in your sketches. It takes some time to get used to it.
Longhi, thanks! Always glad to see someone new visiting my cave
Magdalena, thank you! Oh, you’ve started with the very simple ones as I see. We were given four to choose from all of which had a little bit of midtones, not just a dark shadow area so that we’d know the whole process and could work on the other Bargues more by ourselves. I think I already know which one I’ll choose next. It gets quite a bit harder which each one
Xsiyou, thank you! Happy to know you like it.
Johan, thanks! Oh yeah, I see how most of the stuff they teach me here is really new to me, so I’m ok with not having amazing results the first day. Though I did well after a few days, ha. It took me two hours to draw a little thumbnail of the gesture and another hour for the 30cm figure (that’s how big we draw them) but the next day I did all that in around an hour. But that was from the cast, life drawing will be different.
Fifth day on the first Bargue. Yes, we can work on Saturdays at the academy. I could’ve even taken the Bargue to my flat and worked on it the whole weekend but I wanted to draw something else

HEY RAZZZZZZZ…Looks like your learning good things so far, and sounds like your enjoying the journy also…Which is GREAT to see and hear…![]()
You know, I was just thinking that if I had it to do all over again, I would ask as many teachers as I could,… about what their views and knowlage concerning composition and well designed and defined space were…I would pick their brains about it at every opportunity and with every assignment that I was given and working on,…especally in life drawing class, where it doesn’t matter how well the figure is drawn, if it is not designed and composed well on the page, then it is only half as good as it could be.
Anyway, I just thought that I would throw that thought at you, so you might be able to get that extra bang for your buck from your school and your teachers…
THANKS for sharing your works, and your experiences while going to this great school located in such a great artistic atmosphere…I’m really enjoying both, if even only vicariously…
TAKE CARE RAZZ
Glenn
Glenn, thank you very much! I’ll definitely ask about that, because I haven’t been told anything about that yet. And maybe I won’t be if I don’t ask. So far it was just important to make sure the figure fits in the paper so that no arm goes out of it or something. Well now, first life figure drawing session tomorrow! Wish me luck
Always a pleasure to see you here, Glenn.
Something not from the academy. After Zhanglu.

Hi Razz, great to see you are having an exciting time in Italy! Good progress on that Bargue study and good portrait! Keep going!
love the Zhang Lu study!
yeah we started with the simple ones, thank goodness - I’m not as advanced as you are so it’s quite enough for me heheh… The Bargue’s going great razz. Looking forward to more - it’s fun following your thread.
Batte, thanks! Oh, who could stop me
Magdalena, thank you! Well, there are people that never drew before coming to the academy and they’re not doing Bargues that are more simple. But yeah, no need to rush things. If you find it much more comfortable with the simpler ones, that’s great. Though I do think you could easily do the harder ones
Here’s the Bargue after today. A few more days and I should be done, hopefully.

And something I’m working on outside academy. It’s a study after Dan Dos Santos. I’m watching the DVD for the second time and progressing with the study as I watch the chapters.

seriously? I thought they only admit people with a strong folio? oh well I guess paying is enough - which is kinda great
Zhang Lu’ blog:http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/indexlist_1228943350_1.html
Dan Dos Santos, very very good.study! study! study!
superb work.![]()
there are people that never drew before coming to the academy ???
Keep it up!
Magdalena, yeah, I guess so, but you know, I’ve seen what those who came without drawing experience can do once they’ve went through the whole course (3-4 years), it’s amazing.
Xsiyou, hey, thanks for the link to Zhanglu’s blog! I’ve tried looking for more of his work but was unlucky, so this is just awesome! Lots of good study material, but I really should start working on my own stuff
OK, guys, I want to ask a bit about oil painting. Would appreciate any help. I wanted to get Cobalt Drier, the one that DS mentions in the DVD, but couldn’t find one here, or I may have overlooked, but still, is there any kind of thing that I could use in the same way as the Cobalt Drier? Mixing it in the turpentine/linseed oil mix. What about those fast drying mediums (or just drying mediums)? How are they used? Thank you in advance
Here’s the Bargue after the 6th day. Should finish tomorrow. Can also see a few mistakes (as I’m sure you can also) that are needed to be fixed but that won’t take long.

ah man your Bargue drwaing is coming gorgeous
its great to see your dedication on traditional skills, i should do the same ^^
Mag: are you following a “bargue” drawing class ? i’m interested in taking some
yeah exactly, that’s why I love the idea of not having to know how to do it to start… I mean if I had to have an awesome folio before vfs I woudn’t be here hehehe - I didn’t know ANY 3d whatsoever
I believe dedication is all
Nick - hehe we talked so I won’t sabotage the thread
any more than I already do
Collings, thank you. Yeah, it’s been more traditional than digital when I got here. But one helps the other
Magdalena, yes, dedication is everything. One can really make the course here intensive so results can be seen fairly fast.
Will call this one finished. Might do tiny adjustments tomorrow but those won’t be seen that much so yeah, finished. Chose which one I’ll do next and it’s the head of Dante if any of you know it

Oh, I did get Cobalt Drier today, so hopefully will start painting in the weekend. The art store here has everything, you just have to ask if you can’t find it on the shelves, I like that
