Anatomy Thread of razz - 2D/3D

Really beautiful work razz, it’s amazing to me how young you are. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more as always!

#542

great work on the last piece! if you could apply the same technique/strokes you are using as in that digital/painted pieces when you are working with pencils i think your sketches would look a lot stronger. keep it up! will be keepin an eye on this thread :stuck_out_tongue:

#543

Good. Good. really good Razz.

Your picture produced a deep impression on my head. Good day. :->

#544

Hey Razz

Haven’t stopped by in a while… glad to finally get the time to do so

Your OFDW is looking great! It’s a cheeky devil you’ve got there, great work capturing his expression, and the details as well!

I like your studies - both the imaginational “non-crap” and the ref ones too, keep them up!

cheers and take care
a.

Rebecca, Cok, Newzacade, Frejasphere, thank you everyone! Appreciate you all stopping by.

Now I’m mad at myself. Sitting here trying to draw something from imagination for about 3 hours and I have only 3 stupid gestures which suck to say the least! Not that I wouldn’t think of what to draw, I have ideas, but can’t seem to put them on paper. Damn, I got angry now…Thinking whether to go to sleep or try some more, it’s 3:30 at night.

Gestures from past few days. With refs

#546

Some great motion in those pages razz, and you can really see that the drawing material you’ve studied working it’s way through. The development in your thread makes a great read.

When you’re stuck (working from imagination) it might be a good time to go at it from a different angle. Do something technical, and then branch it back into imagination. EG: grab some expressive hand ref (say from Bridgeman, who has a great style, but doesn’t lock you into the ref), do a few technical exercises, and then develop a few images thinking about what the hands are doing. Or move to a different area, change to a different media, etc. – just coming at the problem from a new angle. Or at least that kind of thing works for me

#547

hey razz
some great gesture drawings

have to agree with kary and also, don’t think so much, let your hand do the thinking and let your mind be still (if that makes sence) every sketch need not be a master piece may only like 1 out of 10 but it’s better then doing nothing 'cause than there is nothing to like
just trying to be helpfull

HEY…RAZZ…

Your frustration with drawing from the imagination has forced me to reflect back about a million years to the time when I first learned how to do it…LOL :scream:
There was a time, in a time far far away, when cartoons were created and animated by hand, and then shown to children on TV… .
One of my favorites, was POPEYE…ANYWAY…The guy who drew POPEYE was the host of the POPEYE show,…in between the cartoons that he created, he would demonstrate how to use and creat with your IMAGINATION using a chalk board with a simple piece of chalk, and the kids like myself, would sit at home with their chalk boards and chalk, and learn and practice how it was done…
His method, was to just draw a mark,…anykind of mark,…just a sqiggly line, or a broad stroke using the side of the chalk, just anything that came out of your hand on impulse, without a thought as to what it was,or was to become, just a shape is all. Then from that simple meaningless shape, CREAT SOMETHING FROM IT,…AN IMAGE…
He would usually end up with animals, crazy looking cartoon charaters ect…all of which could be refined and modified as he progresed with the drawing,…but they all started with a little abstract meaningless shape, done from and on impulse …and then turned into something regonizable, that could be taken further, with just a little bit of imagination…This exercise forces the imagination muscle into action,…that muscle just loves to, and cannot resist CREATING SOMETHING RECONIZABLE FROM NOTHING…:scream:
Another exercise that I learned while in art school many years later, but very simmaler, was to tear up a piece of blank paper into various sized pieces,…all differently shaped…let them fall from your hand onto a bigger piece of drawing paper, and in whatever manner they choose to land,…draw an outline around thier edges/edge that they creat, and then creat somthing from that abstract shape…again, the imagination muscle kicks in,… it just can’t help IT’S SELF…IT’S only funtion in life, is to CREAT SOMETHING FROM NOTHING
I don’t know if this will help you or not, but it is a sure fire, and proven way of stimulating the imagination…that much I do know.
TAKE CARE
Glenn

hey razz!

really beautiful gestures, you got there. your stokes are amazing. so “spot on” every time.
i really think they ooze self confident, though you dosen’t sound that way.
when i get those annoying “drawing blockings”, i usually go for a walk, look at other peoples art, close my eyes and think of something different or just draw crappy until it starts to look okay.
sometimes it also help setting up guidelines for your drawing (i.e big eyes, long teeth and three fingers).
hope this helps.

looking forward to see more of these.

it’s 3:30 at night

maybe you need an early night’s sleep

creativeness drops when fatigue arises…

Kary, thanks for the suggestions. I’ll try them out when I’ll find myself in the same situation as that night. I did manage to draw one little sketch then, hehe. A start, m? Will dive into the very depths of anatomy learning in a few days and hopefully knowing those bones and muscles better will help me express myself on the paper with less struggle.

FateBringer, I’ve noticed myself when drawing from imagination that I try to draw every figure that it could be made into a painting or so, thinking deeply and stuff. I should clear my mind sometimes and just draw, without much thinking about if what I draw could be another Mona Lisa. That is, of course, not what I’m thinking when drawing, but you get the idea  Thanks for the help!

SpiritDreamer, oh, I love when you stop by with such great suggestions. That again shows that I need to free my mind and let my hand do the work. Just for the fun of it, when drawing gestures for example. Let that imagination muscle kick in, hehe  Next time I’ll sit to draw from imagination, I’ll try to create something from nothing. Thank you, Glenn :bounce:

Abyss, valuable suggestions here too. Thanks! I tend to look at other people’s art when I get stuck like that. Well, and then I usually end up doing a study of some great master or draw from reference. Just like that. Drawing from imagination is soooo damn hard! Hey, but to you monsters seem to come out very well! :scream:

Johan, aah, I don’t like to sleep a lot. I need a day of as many hours as possible, 20h would be enough, just as it was that weekend, I slept for 4 hours. Enough for me. I don’t like that sleeping takes so much time, so trying do to that less  I learn and practise more when I have more time. I used to be the tallest guy in class, now I’m one of the smallest, haha! Of course my parents think it’s because I don’t sleep enough. I myself don’t care about that. In my opinion, there are only positive things that I don’t sleep a lot, despite the “I’m a druggie teenage” look around my eyes in the mornings.

I can’t thank you all enough for all the advises! Maybe something beautiful drawn from imagination will show that it helps. I’ll keep working on it. Thank you all again

Self-portrait in oils, from photo reference. Don’t know why exactly my painting teacher suggested me to paint from a photo, not from life  It’s unfinished, I’ll be working on it more. There are flaws which I need to correct and some more detailing would be nice, lips, for example, are really off. Looks sort of like me. Sorry for the very bad photo, bad conditions to take it and my camera isn’t proffesional, you know.

#552

razz, I haven’t commented in here for ages, but this oil sp kicks ass so bad man that I just had to stop and leave a flabbergasted

#553

HEY…RAZZ…

I finally can put a face on the person who is keeping me on my toes all the time…:scream: …GREAT self portrait…
HEY…I just found a GRET GREAT book at the library…one that I checked out a few years ago, but forgot it’s title and author…I just stummbled upon it as I was getting ready to leave the library…made me think of you, so I checked it out again…HOW TO PAINT LIKE THE OLD MASTERS BY JOSEPH SHEPPARD…He shows step by step the painting techniques of Durer, Titian, Veronese, Caravaggio, Rubens, Hals, Rembrandt, and Vermeer…ALL DONE IN WIP FORM, USING OILS, AND HIS OWN MODELS…The guy is really a MASTER PAINTER.
If you are able to, check that book out…That one book will enable you to take your oil painting skills to there highest level I think…
REALLY AN AMAZING BOOK, AND ARTIST…:bounce:

Hi Razz, Wow! Nice self portrait. The collar against the back of your neck seems a little too flat, like the edge should be a little more out from the neck if you know what I mean. Keep up the great work!

#555

Mu, hehe, thanks  Really glad you find it ass kicking

SpiritDreamer, I’ll see what I can do about that book. On amazon it doesn’t seem to be expensive. Though I do have thoughts of buying one book (and then one more), which is pretty high in price. Future will tell. Really keen to take a look at the one you’ve suggested. Ahh, would love that I could find books like this one in the library in town, but I have to order which takes weeks to get it. Then it would better if I could order all the books from one store, but nooo, three books, three stores. I guess I’ll buy them all in time nevertheless

Samanthie, you are right, I messed up that part the last second, when I was already packing everything up. I think I can make it all look better, so expect updates if I won’t mess it up accidently  Learned a lot from this already. Master study in oils is what I’m planning to do next.

Now here’s a speedie from a photo ref. Liked the girls face so decided to paint it. Will continue my Rubens study next. I’ll post the sketches I’ve done later some day when I’ll have more to show.

#556

Hey Razz, amazing work man. Really inspiring. I had a question for self portrait, if you have to do it from life, how do you setup the mirror and how do you do it actually?

#557

Flash, glad you like it  Mhm, I was to do a sp from life, I’d sit (or stand) in front of my easel and mirror so that I would not need to turn my head to see both. Just to turn the eyes and have a full view of my easel and myself in the mirror. I believe this would work even when doing a full figure self-portrait. I’ll try to draw a sp someday this way. I think that the better you are at drawing, the less “frozen” you have to be when drawing yourself from life. Besides, you can move more once you have the major shapes drawn. I’ve tried it only once (got an easel not more than two weeks ago), and it seems to work good, but I’m no expert. People around here, Rebecca for example, will surely know better than I do. Hope this helped nevertheless.

Aah, all kinds of studies and stuff. Some refed, some imaginational, some after other artists, some from life (my left hand, ha). Not gonna go into mentioning which ones.

#558

fantastic sketches razz - as per ususal! I love your abilities with the pencil… the anatomy studies are great! Love the last girl too - would be nice if you could go further with her in photoshop now :D:thumbsup:

#559

Hi…RAZZ…

BEAUTIFUL STUDIES…
The guy playing the flute is my favorite…
Those hands are great…remind me of a program that I just watched on TV. Was about the history of deaf people in the United States, and how sign language developed within thier silent circle and world. This in turn reminded me of how all of the different Native American Tribes used to use sign language instead of words to comunicate with each other, because thier spoken language was different according to each tribe…THE HAND, and the gestures it is capible of expressing, became thier universal language…A lost art in self now, except for the deaf, for whom it who it still has a funtion…Some amazing expressive hand gestures going on in that program that I just watched on the history of deaf people…
Anyway…just a little trivia…might spark something in that GREAT imagination of yours…who knows…
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK …RAZZ…ALWAYS A PLEASURE SEEING IT…

Hey Razz, I really love those last sketches you’ve made. They feel so poignant to me. I think my fav is the girl with her arms like wings gliding…
