Anatomy Thread of razz - 2D/3D

razz,

I don’t think you’re making any mistakes. It’s a great idea to mix up master studies and studies from photos / reference with imaginational studies. There’s no ‘rules’ as to what you have to do, I think your instincts are good and you should follow your gut feeling as to what you should study.

The main thing I think is not to think in absolutes - eg., I think some people (not yourself) think that they should only do master studies up to a point, and then do all stuff from imagination without reference. All artists throughout history have used reference to some degree, so it’s just a matter of using it in the way which best suits your needs.

Always look forward to your updates.

#522

you just shouldnt be too scary doing things withouth ref. I do em too, they mostly turn out bad…but every now and then you make something good, and that just is the best feeling you can have
anyways the backstudies on the last page are awesome…I think they are reffed (?), but stilll…clean and correct…wish I could do that
keep it up, post more imaginational things, push them!

Cyanid.

#523

Well, Rebecca and Bart already told you all. I can only add to never stop, it’s a pleasure to spend time looking at your sketches !

#524

Always a pleasure to watch your thread! I think you are doing fantastic work!
I agree with Rebecca,I think what u are doing with you gut feel is most likely going to give u the best results,“Just remember there are no rules only tools”!( Glenn Vilppu)

#525

Rebecca, thank you. You are right about that, though I believe it’s fun sometimes to do make a piece without any refs, isn’t it? I think I just have to keep practising and it’ll do good for sure. I just want to spend more time practising, can’t seem to have enough of drawing or painting.

Cyanid, thanks for the encouragement. And yes, those ones you’re talking about are reffed. I’m trying to draw more imaginational stuff these last days, hopefully something will turn out better if I spend more time on it.

CyborgJA, glad you like it here  Trying to post better stuff, but now I’m doing more imaginational work which, as seen, doesn’t turn out as good, but it will in time, hehe.

Thomasphoenix, yeah, I believe you’re right. So I’ll just keep going. This practise sure makes better, only I would love that this would go faster, haha  I feel I’m not putting as much effort. Wanna draw and paint more :scream:

Thanks you everyone, you all put a smile on my face and encourage me to work more!! :bounce:

Here’s an oil painting study. Alla prima, after Richard Schmid. Gonna buy his book soon now, hopefully.

HEY…RAZZ…

Some nice strong brushstrokes in that last one…:applause:
That’s the kind of painting that would be great to save that version, and then see if you can take it just a little further, without losing the spontanaity in the piece…maybe pop in highlights in the eyes, a couple of white hairs here and there in the beard and mustache…maybe deeper shadows here and there…just experiment with your imagination on it, just to see what happens…you don’t have anything to lose, and a lot to gain when you do it, because you will have this version saved already…just a thought…

Real oils!?! I heard they are really tricky to use, great for blending though. He seems a bit elongated.

#528

Hi Razz, very interesting SB you’ve got here. I like the value study of the Rubens you did. Lots of great paintings too. Keep going!

#529

SpiritDreamer, that’s an interestng siggestion really. Only I don’t know if I’ll do that in traditional media. Maybe with artrage or something, would be fun to experiment, and I would be able to undo  Though I must say, oils are soooo fun to use! You were right when you said that I’ll like them.

Womball, he was even more elongated, this is how he looks after correcting. Made again the same mistake when I stop thinking about proportion and anything about construction when painting. My first that big portrait though, so I’m pretty happy it doesn’t look very bad.

Batte, it’s not just a value study. I will add color after I complete the grayscale. Just a technique I thought would be fun to try on this study. First time doing that. Lots of fun! This will, with no doubt, be my biggest study ever made, hehe.

Big thanks to you all for stopping by :bounce:

Worked more on it. Correcting, adding detail…

#530

razz, you are doing a wonderful job on this devil. Very detailed. Looking forward to seeing the colors.

#531

HEY…RAZZ…

Have to agree with Samanthie…you really are doing a great job with that Rubens…captured those expressions perfectly…:applause:
Also, it’s GREAT that you are liking the oils…a medium that is hard to beat, in a lot of different subtle ways.
A few years ago, the MADONA OF THE ROCKS, AND THE MONA LISA paintings of DaVinci came to Boston,…so I went and took a look at them, close up and for real…totally blew me away…what he did with oils, PURE MAGIC,…SUBLIME in the true sense of the word.
I don’t think any other medium can even come close to achieving the results that he managed to get using oils…so stick with them, they are for sure worth the time and effort…
Also, I just meant for you to experiment on and practice with that portrait you did , while you had it in the computer, not to creat a whole new one in the traditional manner…that would be asking a bit much I think…:scream:
GREAT PROGRESS …RAZZZ…CAN’T WAIT TO SEE MORE OF YOUR WORKS…ALWAYS A REAL PLEASURE…

#532

Samanthie, thank you. I’m looking forward to that too, hehe

SpiritDreamer, I understood you correctly about the experimenting on that portrait. I meant that I could experiment on it with digital media, because it would be more imaginational work practise, not oil painting. Want to work on one thing at a time. Staying with oil paints all right, hehe  Though I want to learn gouache too, because it is used for illustrations and well, it’s a very fun medium too. I like using it.
Bad thin I never had an apportinity to see a great masterpiece for real, only trhough my monitor or books. Sometime later I guess

Imaginational crap

Oil painting study after John Howard Sandens

#533

razz,

Fantastic effort here with the oil painting especially, I can tell that you already really ‘get’ oil paint.

If you don’t have msn, perhaps you could try GoogleTalk.

Cheers

#534

Hey Razz

I particularly like the pen sketches on the right of the 2nd image. Really love how you play with light and shadow there!

#535

Hi…RAZZ…
Don’t forget to get a thin colored wash down on the canvas FIRST…acts as your midtone, and unifies everything…plus, if you decide to not go all the way with details, your painting will still have a more finished look to it, and you won’t have to cut in a background at the end…will already be there…
BEAUTIFUL study of that child with the hat…I like them all…

#536

Hi Razz, I really like the studies, especially the babies. The one in the hood is so sweet. Nice pen and ink too.

#537

Rebecca, thanks! Really trying to learn painting now. Trying not just to draw everyday but to paint everyday too. You know, I do have time now, hehe  Just gotta use it visely.

Johan, those are fast and fun. Addind a watercolor wash to them would create a nice feeling. I’m practising gesture drawing these last days, so maybe I’ll do in that kind of style. We’ll see  Good to see you stop by. Hope that hand’s getting better, mate

Glenn, thank you for the suggestion, I may just do that on my next study! Toning the surface I paint on, why couldn’t I think of that myself…I did those child head studies to see how the proportions go, as you know they’re different then of a grown-up. Well and those heads don’t look mature, so I achieved what I wanted. What made me do these, were those guys who draw portraits in streets in one festival in my town. I mean, when they draw a child it turns out mature, because of the proportions. Though for a 5min. sketch it still looks beautiful it doesn’t look very much like the child he was drawing. So, no adult proportions in childs, hehe

Samanthie, thanks, I think of painting one of those two child heads, just a speedpaint  Oh, I have lots of things I want to draw, paint, but no matter how much time I have, it’s still not enough.

I did this study after AztcFireFlower on an A2 sheet, but cropped to show you only this part because the rest looks even more worse. Did this with a graphite stick, it didn’t blend at all, so left it as is, and I made a mistake by having a textury board under my sheet, so that texture transfered on the drawing. MANY flaws done, but a good lesson for the future.
I’ll post some gestures I’ve done tomorrow.

#538

Well, it express personality !
I love surfing your thread. It restores all the will to paint !

#539

Hey Razz! I havent been here lately… your OFDW piece has turned out fabulously:applause:… are you gonna color it? love your latest sketches too!

#540

CyborgJA, thank you there!

Anand, yes, I am going to color it, but before that a lot of more work on the value painting await  Not gonna make it on time until the OFDW ends, but I’ll keep on going.

Great to see you both stopping by! Btw, CyborgJA, I think you haven’t updated your thread for a while now or is just me, mm?

Ok, so it’s a bit late now and I’m too lasy to scan the gestures in today. Got to remember to do that tomorrow. Today I worked more on the OFDW piece. Worked on the main satyr’s head details. Takes sooo much time, and I’m slow too. Here you go
