HEY…RAZZ…

COMPOSITION WITH GOOD FEELING…GOOD FEELING WITH COMPOSITION…:scream: …YES…
It’s great to do a painting straight from the imagination, but it is also great to see realism in a fantasy…that’s were refferences come in handy.
Like in those three little doodles that I just posted in my thread…they are nice little composition, color studies, but just that. If I were to make them finished paintings, I would search for as much refferences as I could find, …fabric for the clothing, a model for the pose,…myself in the mirror if I couldn’t find one,…a real still life for the basket of fruit and book…ect.
You should start making a file with all sorts of photo’s of things you like, and think you might use in a painting someday…swords for example…shields, costumes, …whatever…just things that will come in handy when you go to make a painting, and want it to have a greater sense of realism, wheater it be a total fantasy from your imagination or not, it will always benifit from that extra sense of realism…will add to the illussion…ALWAYS…
THINK YOUR ARE DOING A FANTASTIC JOB…RAZZ…YOU ARE FOR SURE ON THE RIGHT PATH…JUST KEEP FOLLOWING IT, AND ALWAYS TRUST YOUR INSTINCT…

Hi Razz

Glad you can take some of the ideas onboard - and you can definitely trust that you know stuff, you are going places and have a lot of talent

Never say never… (about acrylics that is)

And for goache… I like to paint on primed masonite board, if you gesso the board a few times, you’ll end up with a surface that doesn’t “suck up” the paint straight away. It’s also (hopefully) something you can come by easily and cut to any size or shape you like. Apart from that; canvas works well (needs to be primed well), as does thick paper.

Good luck

Are you still working on the last Bob Kato one? His left eye… looking at, is looking a bit lifeless, a reflection or change of tone in the eye-area…? Also the ear feels as though it needs one darker tone in the centre part - to show that hole depth. Other than that, it’s a good study in values. Keep going

cheers a.

Rebecca, so that’s what caused it. I’ll remember that the next time. And hey, my pleasure to be participating here  Don’t worry about commenting more or less

SpiritDreamer, I think it’s every artist’s preference to use refs or not to. Some like it, some don’t. Personally, I would like to be the one who doesn’t use them. Of course there will still be stuff that one will not know how it looks, for example a flower of which one heard of the first time or a tree or some plant, whatever. Than the refs come to help. I guess we all have our same likes and dislikes.

Frejasphere, thanks! I’ll try to gesso a board on my next goauche study and see how that feels. Painting few coats with acrylics should work too, shouldn’t it? Still so many stuff I haven’t tried even once, oh my.
The study is supposed to be finished, but after your crits I believe I will make corrections. But I may not post it here. Maybe you know an artist who is awesome with goauche? I’ve found one, but he only paints environments and I’m more into people (as if it’s not obvious). Some kind of an illustrator maybe, those guys use gouache.
So, I’ll try to make a new painting study as soon as I have the time for that. Be it with oils or gouache. I don’t know how to thank you for your help. I appreciate it a lot, and it helps me push forward.

Imaginational crap!

#464

Hi razz,
I like the last piece a lot. Very nicely done! You have done a nice contrast between light and shadow
Your Bob Kato has no eyes? Is this like the original or did you not paint them yet?
Keep going

#465

Trunks, well, he sorta doesn’t have there either. Maybe some very minor value change in the eye area, but no highlights or I’m just blind, which would be bad for me wanting to become an artist. Glad you like my imaginational quicky. Hopefully, it’s a start to something bigger

Nooow, everyone, please, listen! I want to ask if any of you read a book by Richard Schmid “Alla Prima: Everything I Know About Painting”. I read elsewhere that it’s a great book. Anyone here read it and could advise me?
And damn, I need to learn to paint! I know, I know, it’s practise that matters, but hell, I don’t know what I’m doing when painting. And it would be great to add more knowledge into my head. What are your opinion, guys and girls?

#466

Hi Razz

Keep pushing  is really the only advice I can give you… and do keep posting your paintings; that way you can get a variety of ideas from feed-back. I’d like to see what you do to the Bob Kato one  I haven’t got the book you mentioned, although I’ve heard of it and am sure it would give you some great advice and ideas  (Better to hear from someone that has it…)

cheers and take care!

Frejasphere, thanks. Unfortunately I haven’t taken gouache out since that day, so no corrections on the Bob Kato study. Been playing with oils lately. Done one study which I’ll post here now and one painting is in the making this minute. Though it’s not good looking, I’ll think if it needs to be posted. I’ve done one speedpaint with Painter, but I want to work on it more before posting. And later today I’ll show some pencil studies after Marko Djurdjevic and if I have time one master study.
Don’t anyone think I’ve been slacking these days  (although I never have as much time as I want to draw and paint).

After AztcFireFlower (hope you don’t mind that). If you do, just tell me, and I’ll remove it. Just looked to me as a good study material

#468

After Marko Djurdjevic, as promised. Done this one to get a little bit more comfortable with clothed figure and as pencil and line study.

Razz,

“Imaginational Crap” … lol… you mean imaginational art! Maybe it doesn’t show all your qualities, but it sure does show a lot of them

Donnow if the painted girl was after ref or not, but her facial features seem a bit squeezed together to me. Can’t give you any advise on the painting book though… all I can say is that I bought 10 books last year and from the ones I’ve looked into already, not one didn’t teach me anything.

Your last drawing is really wonderful. Is the profile view meant to be the same character as the frontal view? If so, there are some things to be fixed like the cheekbone and the overall shape of the head. The clothing is really nice.

Will be dropping in again in a few days, cause there is always a lot to discover here :bounce:

#470

I’ll reiterate what Johan said! Imagination art! I love that ‘crap’ most of all so I really feal insulted LOL It’s brilliant razz! keep’em coming! you made me go back to my pencil lately… + I have no web connection atm so it’s easier as well  Following your crap and such very closely always! keep inspiring :bounce:

#471

Johan, I always write if a piece is imaginational or refed or anything else, just above the pic  And yes, that was meant to be the same character, but also the study wasn’t meant to be recreating the drawing 100%. It was just clothes study and of course for line-work. When doing small studies like these I don’t go into measuring all the proportions just as in the peace I’m studying or making it as similar as I can. I just have fun while studying it, not erasing if I did the finger a little more bent than in the ref.
About my imaginational crap, well, I’m happy you like it. I see how much more work I must put into doing imaginational pieces in order to make them better. One little piece in a week won’t help me much.
So, the learning of drawing and painting adventure continues!
I must thank you for the critiques, that’s one of many things I really need in order to improve my skills. Glad you’re stopping by from time to time here, mate

Intervain, well it was you more or less to inspire me and get that tablet working and do that piece. Remembering your imaginational paintings made me do one too. And I have one in the making. I think I’ve already mentioned that. If it turns out better than bad, I’ll post it  Oh, and I’ll be checking your thread to see the pencil stuff!

After Andrea Del Sarto. Little fast study, nothing fancy.

#472

Good job man, very nice shading.
The hand holding, whatever it is, looks abit wierd though.

#473

great pencil works!

#474

Wasker, CyborgJA, thank you both for stopping by. Lots of appreciation

Now for the news. I’ve been trying to draw from imagination these few days, but again, nothing good is coming out. I wonder what might help on that…I guess time and hard work. Only I’m a bit lost now. Doing all those studies from other great artists. Looking at those studies and thinking “yes, great, I pretty much like it”, but hey, I can’t do half of that from imagination.
But whimpering won’t get me anywhere, so back to work I go. You might just not see many updates, because I’m not getting a satisfying result when drawing from imagination.

Good luck everyone.

#475

Truly inspiring amount of work, and at 16!quality too, if you keep this up who knows where you’ll end up.
Some of my favourite are the gestures from imagination (like on the first page), it looks like you have a real feel for the figure and movement.

Good luck

Hey Razz

2 thoughts on drawing from imagination…

  1. Put on some music you really love and try to draw what you “see” the images that the music conjures up, or the memories, the mood, the colours that flow in your mind as you listen…

  2. Don’t feel bad about posting stuff you’re not happy with, sometimes it’s really good to post the ones you feel are lacking or need improvement, not because people will cut them to bits - I don’t believe they will; having fresh eyes through other viewers can sometimes give you answers to problems, offer you an alternate way of looking - you might find that some of the feed-back can inspire you for the next one, or help you see that you’re on the right track after all… just a thought

and looking forward to more updates

cheers and take care

I love the aztecfireflower study, and the last pencil study is lovely, your control of line is coming across very well there. And having read your response to my last comment, I know just where you’re coming from about improvement. I posted my own in that thread, painful as it was to show people the shockingly horrible work i did when I was 18… thats older than you are now, and you make me quake just thinking about where you could go with skills you’re learning now. I wish I’d had communities like this when I was 18… ahaha now I sound old. But lovely stuff, keep it up!

#478

Hi razz,
nice upgrades
I think you should try to do harder contrasts in your color pieces … just give it a try

Your technique to shade is very nice looking at your last sketch … I like how it looks  Good work!

Keep it up

Hi…Razz…
Have to agree with Annette…can’t help you, if we don’t see your mistakes…:scream: save your perfections for later, I want to see some CRAP…:scream:

Classical music is made to inspire VISION…ether that, or PINK FLOYD.

Hazaeon, those gestures on the first page are studies after Vilppu, but I am more or less able to draw something similar to those from imagination now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Frejasphere, that’s some great ideas there, you know. I’ll post the bad stuff  And about the first thought, I gotta do that! Thanks a lot.

Zephyri, thank you! Well yeah, I guess I’m at the same phase now as you were back then. But really, as painful as it might be, I think it’ll be worth it.

Trunks, oh my, and I thought I show the contrast pretty much. Always trying to use all tones from 1 to 10, from the lighest light to the darkest dark. Will have to watch that more carefully, something must be wrong  Good to have you dropped by.

SpiritDreamer, crap you want, crap you’ll get. That one sentence makes things turn the other way: “Save your perfections for later”. Oh, and either that, or Manowar :buttrock: Then the drawings such in the theme of Frazetta would come out, haha

The CRAP from the mind! Nothing finished as a sketch or anything else, mainly putting ideas out. Maybe for later use, who knows. Maybe not
