Hi…QueenSoul… REALLY like that last one…nice composition…:applause:
Might be a good time to try using some colored transparent …TINTS
Will cover the lint ect.,…plus act like a unifying element in your painting…uniting the backgroung with the portrait…Some of the old masters used a lot of colored transparent TINTS, to creat a great luminious depth in thier paintings…DaVinci…
Might make this mishap of lint ect. work to your advantage…might open the door to something you haven’t tried yet…TINTING EXPERIMENTS…JUST A THOUGHT…

QS,

Nice to see your portrait here.

I would suggest watching the alignment of the eyes - also one thing that might give the portrait more depth is a bit of a highlight (small, perhaps a shade of light blue) somewhere along the cheek at it’s highest point. If your canvas is still wet, a nice amount of a light blue mixed in with the orangey-brown of the face will really make a nice neutral gray that should lean toward the blue in a slight way.

I like the richness of the shirt and neck. At this point, the face feels slightly less rich (this could be due to the camera). Take a look at the works of Frida Kahlo for background / foreground color combinations.

[left]I would suggest using a slightly richer hue in the background, so that you are not just ‘killing space’ but really using a nice subtly complementary color combination to frame the man’s face.

Hope this helps, and looking forward to your progress.

Cheers,

-Rebecca

Queensoul

Just went to your entire thread and it was a great trip to be honest.
I downloaded your refs from Italy… I’ll see if I can get my hands on those
I was especially enjoying your digital studies
Thanks for sharing your work n knowledge.

NR43 thank you for stopping by.
I have been quite busy at the art school trying to get used to the insane pace of the life painting classes. I know I have made up my mind that I cannot paint anything serious in 5 to 30 minutes; I hope when I get used to the pace some more, I can make more connection between the model and my canvas. These are some of the poses I managed to sketch and photograph.

#246

Not a lot to do in the time aloted, but am beginning to enjoy it.

Hello, Queensoul.

It is great to see you work on your studies. I think that Rebecca’s suggestions and examples are very good. We could all do with studying Frida’s work.

I noticed that you tend to stop short of doing the hands. I know that hands and feet have always been problematic for me and have, over the years, forced myself to focus on them more because I actually love them.

I would love to see you start to put them in more…if they are a bit out of your comfort zone…to push yourself.

Cris

They are not in my comfort zone but thats not why they are not there . Its simply that I never get to it in the short poses in life drawing. As I continue to grow accustomed to painting/drawing the figure in 20 minutes, I’ll start getting them in

Hi…QueenSoul…

I don’t know what the program is in your class, or if there are rules or whatever, but if you
only have a short time to capture the figure, maybe try just making a solid peanut shape… in the shell, with
a big brush or the side of your charcoal …for the pelvic area small end of peanut, and for the torso, large end of peanut, to start with
…Then add the legs/feet coming out of the small end of peanut…then the arms/hands coming out of the large part of peanut…in that order.
next put the neck, skull, face, hair…in that order.
That is the system that I learned from Burne Hogarth…it’s fast, simple, and acurate…gets all the basic volumes down first…then add detail last…if there is time…:scream:
Always look for that peanut shape to start with…once you see it,and decribe it with paint, charcoal or whatever… it is all down hill from there…
Hope this system helps you…works like a charm, once you master it…

Glenn, thanks as usual for your help. I am getting slightly used to the mad pace of the practice sketches in class and the ‘different’ rules they have. Anyway, am not discouraged. After one month of a 9 year course, I feel like am going to make it. :stuck_out_tongue: I have it on good authority that the poses will slow off gradually after 6 months. We are not supposed to put any details on these. Just the arabasque, or whatever that means. But anyhoot… just wanted to share what I was doing. These sketches should not even have left my house :stuck_out_tongue:

Sculpture drawing. I had already gone too far when I found out I was using the ‘wrong’ side of the canson paper. This is the side with all the teeth thats hard to cover up.

#252

Wip of an image am doing. Submitted this as a filler to my eon challenge  Sort of a hail mary throw. Image is referenced from a picture of a little girl I saw lying around somewhere.
My original intent is to draw it for an oil painting. The original drawing is on a 80 by 110cm drawing paper to be transfered to canvas. I shot a picture of this and uploaded to photoshop.

#253

Hehe, my girlfreind told me it looks like she has breasts. Uoh OH; Must remember to work on those.

#254

Hi QS

That’s a nice torso study you got there.
I think the part between the ribcage and the pelvic area might be a bit elongated, and I think if you where to soften up the contour line on the left side of the image it might help to settle it back in space a bit – it’s just a bit contrasty right now.

I actually kind of like the texture that “drawing on the wrong side of the paper” gave you, it gives it a bit of character. I guess that what people call “happy accidents” .

Nice stuff, keep it up.

Queensoul,

I hope someday, you finish that little girl as a pencil…it’s got such a beautiful delicate quality to it. I like your painting, too…the chest area will work as you put in the tones and shadows, I think. There is something about the mouth that seems a little off, but it’s very pretty.
