Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso

#501

Great stuff Jancko! There’s nice action in your figures, I should really make my lines more confident too.

Here’s a quick one I just did:

096:
RIBERA, Jusepe de
Martyrdom of St Philip
1639
Oil on canvas, 234 x 234 cm
Museo del Prado, Madrid

jancko: there are two ways I approach to my drawigs: 1)I first draw manually the subject with pencil or a fountain pen, then I scan and import in Photoshop where I add some layers with colors, lines and effects. 2) I start to draw directly in Photosop ad my Intuos3 tablet. I use an A4 page at 300 dpi with simple brush to sketch my subject.
I’d like to try this process in Painter but I’m not so able and I have to learn a bit more about this program.
However your last post is very interesting<>good sketching.

#503

Sorry I haven’t commented more. You guys are just too prolific for me to keep up with.

This is one of the figures from #005. Litho Crayon and white chalk on oatmeal paper.
I put a little mini-demo on my sketchbook thread.

Some comments, mostly about recent work.

(I’ve only gone back to remind myself of a couple of pages so far, but I remember that the images that I’ve seen here over the last few weeks are truly incredible. So everyone, take your bows! Great work.)

Dim, have to say that your quick torsos would take me hours – good job

Razz, I’ve yet to work with texture as you suggest – one of these days – my images must be looking too smooth?

Serena, I hope I keep whatever it is you liked in my work – at least you weren’t put off by the roughness of them

Scott, very effective work on #05

Kewn, you say a lot with just a few lines - good suggestion of muscle tension in that last one

jancko, your bad line one is my favourite – I painted this one in PS, and you said much more with your simple line work

Mark, yep, still around, in fits and starts – hope your torsos are still coming along

ytresu, you’ve really got a great style going there now with your torsos – economical but very expressive

monicaitt, I like your WIP crouching figure as it is

TripletDad, skilful work with #3 and #4

Michael, # 87 is a great gestural sketch – the emotion and tension is all there

craban, nice digital work; I especially like Neptune

Laleloh, nice delicate-looking pencil work in your 19th torso

Ha-dou-ken, your golden woman has a definite solidity

ManicGarcia, I like your colour choices for the Laocoon torso, and the way that you seem to have moulded those paints into shape

spartan02, I liked your kneeling woman sketch

Roberto, very nice work on # 54 – great softness, and delicate result; I especially like his face and curls

pierceda, your 9th torso has a great sense of action

#505

I’m really liking alot of the linework I see in this thread.

TripletDad - I like your pastel style. I think I should try using them more. Never used them outside of class.

Fantastic atmosphere! keep the nice works coming everyone!

craban: you do made some progress on your digital painting

michael-olszak: good work! you have a good way of expressing real pencil feeling with artrage.
TripletDad: nice pastel staff!

ytresu: I love your linework

jancko: good combination with pencil and ink! a very good style!

Kewn: congratulations to your new sketchbook!

JoshT: your work is so smooth, I like it!

YMS: Man you are really diligent, love #15 most

My updates,
some of my firends said my work is not black enough, so I strengthened the shadow, however, it turns out sucked:sad:

tried another, emphersis on contrast, is it better? (still sucks I think…)

#508

kmscottmoore - Nice study, very confident lines, I like the arms

YMS - Thanks! Great studies you got there, especially the first one. I think I’ll do some digital too (well I’ll try).

JoshT - Great sense of twisting in the body, I should pick some twisted masters too, can be pretty tricky.

LaleLoh - Thanks man. Did your friends talk about contrast or just black? I think we got the same problem, I always lack in contrast too… Just practice I guess. Maybe it helps to see the master painting in greyscale, eventually upping the contrast a bit. I think that makes it easier to see different values.

Just did a new study, my shading kinda sucks, somehow I can’t get it right. Can’t even finish it. There’s just so much going on in the shading of these works.

still fighting with the crosshatching, better left arm though

ytresu: thank you for the information, I’ll try your way with some of my drawings
YMS: you have potential, keep working at it. Great Ganymede by the way.
LaleLoh: thanks for your words; I’m only using ink, still working on it.

I read somewhere MICHELANGELO has good Hatching studys, I’ll try to study him more

Forst of all I would like to say that it was really cool to partecipate to this workshop. Drawin unfortunatly is not part of my job (I’m chemistry so I can only draw molecules) even if I would have loved to take some drawing school and have a “old school” background in art. This workshop for me was the opportunity to take 30 minutes everyday in lunch pause and to “play” with pencil (no photoshop in office). I think I won’t suceed in finishing all 50 torsos but I guess this was a good training. At least I hope to have learned something in human figure.
All around great posts and great works !

#520

Hey jojo1975 it ain’t over yet

Frejasphere I like your simplifications. They must look really great in real, being on big paper
