Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 2 - The Torso

#441

ytresu: Thanks for such a wonderful compliment  I have to say I really enjoy the simplicity of your studies. You have great control of your lines/proportions and I love the lightness of your values. I think the combination makes for a very pleasing image… absolutely beautiful work!

To answer your question, the background is just a sheet of white paper I tore out of my sketch book and scanned in. I usually mess with the brightness/contrast until I get something that has a little grit and texture. To color the bg, I create a seperate layer over the scanned bg, set the layer properties to multiply, do a color fill and adjust the opacity until I get something that looks good.

Redsand1080: Strong pencil work on the Rubens study… great work.

Icey: Thanks brotha! I have to say the same for your studies too

#442

ytresu your last piece is very nice, i love your lines.

#443

Puppeil, that’s sick man. Very nice.

#444

ha-dou-ken - thanks man!

at first i tried to use mechanical pencil and markers, but it didnt look any good so i switzed to acrylics… still i messed his proportions quite badly. i guess i should’nt have drawn it while luying on my bed. hehhee :stuck_out_tongue:

#445

I think I forked up. I don’t think this one was on the list.

Redsand1080-Thanks :),though my hatching is lacking. You have done a nice study.Let’s see more

I thought to do it in line only and again got distracted with shading  .Maybe next time

Puppeli: the battle of Michelangelo is a very cool work! It’s fine the acrylics too

piccolabella: your drawing style is fresh<>I like a lot your lines/drawings

RobertoOrtiz: there’s a big update here<>truly good anotomy studies

Icey: very cool pencil work

#451

Wow, Puppeli! I thought one of yours was a photograph of a carved statue at first glance. Nice rendering!

Here’s four more I sketched in Painter Classic. I did colored versions too, to get a feel for the volume, but I’ll spare you because I haven’t yet figured out a quick and efficient way to render shading so its pretty ugly. (I’ve got to figure out how to properly hatch and cross hatch one of these days.)

Hey people awesome stuff here! I tried one too, it’s my first master copy.

I see loads of tutorials and workshops spread in this forum, is there any order or track to be followed? I ask this cause I’m getting pretty desperate lately so I’m really looking for some structure in my learning process. It’s quite a problem cause I can’t afford good art education now and I’d love to get into concept art (bought several books tho…)

Anyway here’s my try:

         018:
         MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
         Ignudo
         1509
         Fresco
         Cappella Sistina, Vatican

#453

Arr, I’m all new to this. Tell me if I’m doing anything wrong!

Hehe, so I tried myself on nr. 1, 2 and 43. I know they’re horrible, all three of them, so please, be gentle!

#454

Hi Kewn, welcome. The focus of the Anatomy Forum is really the basics of art as they relate to the figure and not concept art in particular, but I hope that you can find a lot of useful information here (which I think you will) which will help you to become a better artist.

I think you that this thread might best help to get you started:

Personal Sketchbook Primer and Tutorial / Workshop Guide

The main avenue of interaction on the forum apart from these Workshops is this section of the forum:

Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads
http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=200

Where you are welcome to set up your own Personal Sketchbook, where you are likely to receive more individual comments and feedback from the community. Please see this thread first:

FAQ: Can I Create My Own Sketchbook or Anatomy Thread?

I suggest purchasing a few books and / or DVDs:

Anatomy Resources : BOOKS

As for a specific track, I think that you should check out the first link I posted and go from there - if you have not worked digitally before, I recommend trying the Shading Tutorial / Exercise digitally.

However, if you are a high school student, then I HIGHLY recommend working ONLY TRADITIONALLY as art schools really look only for traditional work in a portfolio.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

almostkungfu,

Welcome! You are not doing anything wrong. I think you are doing a good job here - keep working, you’ll get better the more of these you do.

Cheers,

#455

Hi Rebeccak thanks for the tips, I’m gonna check these out! I’m not a highschool student and I’m already 20, working a shitty frustrating job now till I can do something with art, I’ve always been a late bloomer…
Anyway, I’ve done several attempts on learning to draw and paint and I sure did improve, but I really think I need some kind of structure, I just wish there were some good ateliers here. I also tried digitally a bit (just speedpaintings, I won’t bother this thread with that).

In the meanwhile I’ve been expanding my book collection, maybe even too much. So far I like Vilppu most but I ordered the Drawing Lessons book from Hale cause I’m becoming more and more convinced about the value of studying old masters lately.
Some of my favorite artists are Kevin Llewellyn (+Puddnhead), Craig Mullins, Sargent and way more awesome artists.

I might sound appointing but I find complete self study pretty hard, probably also because I think and doubt too much about it.

Anyway, thanks!

#456

Kewn, no problem. I think your best bet is to start a Personal Sketchbook thread as it is always easier and more motivating to work in a group environment than on one’s own - even if it’s virtually. Of course an atelier is ideal, but you have to make do with what’s available - and there are simply tons of resources available here and elsewhere.

I suggest completing all 50 torsos for this thread and then trying the 50 heads exercise:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031

And posting your progress both to the respective Workshop threads and to your Personal Sketchbook Thread. The way things work is, as in life, the more you give, the more you receive - the more you interact with the community here, by posting constructive critique to others’ Sketchbook Threads, etc., the more support you will receive in return. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Cheers,

Herez an attempt in 3D…

#458

Hello everyone, I’ve six more.
great work everyone, I get inspiration by the work of Thomasphoenix , MechaHateChimp, Ytresu, Redsand1080, Icey …keep it up!

Redsand1080: what it is WIPs exactly?

not quite what I hoped, great thread though  Rebeccak.

so I think somethig was missing, I made some additional studys to understand better my problem!!!

              RUBENS, Pieter Pauwel
              Pan and Syrinx

more studys

correct me if I’m wrong, I realize that with crosshatching not only the shading it’s important but also the line direction helps to modelate the form, some direction works better than others, specially ā€œhorizontal and verticalā€ directions…again ā€œconsistency is keyā€ ( words by Rebeccak ) 3D modelers will know this better.
something else, try to approach to this exercises modeling the torso…crosshatching parallel to structure and contour , sounds like a good idea, I read it somewhere else (don’t remember where, It’s easy to get lose in this threads  )
…oh and avoid right angles in crosshatching.

All of this are mostly hunches, You will see my conclusions in later drawings

043:
              RUBENS, Pieter Pauwel
              Bacchus
              1638-40
Oil on canvas, transferred from panel, 191 x 161,3 cm
              The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

playing around

002:
              MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
              Bacchus
              1497
              Marble, height: 203 cm
              Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence

done directly, without structure…love how the lines workout!
