Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head

#121

My advice, which origiinally came from two great sketching masters, John Howe and Alan Lee (him in particular), use 3B to 9B if your just sketching, if its full blown shaded work, use all the range of pencils from 9H to 9B. But for expressive stuff like this use a 4B or something close to. 2B can be a little too midtone for my taste, and HB is for graphic monkeys (no offence guys :stuck_out_tongue: )

I will let some of the more knowledgeable comment on your construction work.

This time 3d, made with wings3D

I have major difficulties modelling ears… and the nose is too exagerated… and had to stop modelling on this, gotta do something else!

Well here it is, does this count as four heads? :scream:

rebecca: thanks! I like your first head best so far, nice 3d feeling.

@all: wow, so many so great works, this is really cool! also thanks for sharing progress animations, it’s really interesting to see how other artists work.

#123

it was really nice idea to kill 50 heads in a month, i’m in~! maybe can’t post in time, but i will try, because i have still in < Painter IX Creativity >'s translated job, lol~~~

< Head 001 >

uesd openCanvas 1.1, 3 hours maybe.

#124

Hi all! I like this Idea!

Miezis: Hey great head, what subdiv you using at ZBrush?

Your max head looks better anyway. You managing this fast !

Crits:
I think original sculpt has more triangular shape, the face is thinner, malar bone is more evident close to the ear, in between eyebrows the bones should project more outside making the skin fold inwards. The ear should flatten a bit more to face at the top, your model the ear is pointing to the back of the head instead should have a lil bit more angle.
The forehead - should be flatten a lil. more.
Hope you don“t mind those crits, what you made was astonishing fast, pushing and pulling those polys at that speed you made a great work. Keep up.

#126

Oh wow! You guys have done some amazing work here.
I did my first head today. Was halfway done before I realized the head was positioned differently than 052. But anyway submitting it as finished. Lesson learned: Never ever ever stop measuring. Carbon pencils on canson pastel paper.

#127

Yeahh, nice one RK:thumbsup:
zhuzhu: awesome work

here’s my first 2.

#128

Wow, so much work already! kunal lovely work on that pencil sketch. robbackman thats pretty impressive thus far with the face madel of 086., ditto for Miezis. agostino I love the rendering of your version of 045, the young moor.
Zhu gorgeous as ever. great work with getting the smooth stone texture and DiM i really like your first post too.

And here are my two. I chose to do Christ from number 043, by Caravaggio (textures helped greatly by the addition of a little noise in photoshop) and no 086, spent about 2 hours a piece so far:

My scanner sucks, [A- Its only A4 and I’ve been working in A3, [B- It does not capture the colours properly. This and the first one look way better in reality (colour/tone-wise).

Tria-Pantone 154-T Marker
Tria-Pantone 485-T Marker
Tria-Pantone Process Black

I know your digital works look more impressive, but I find Traditional more challenging and in the end, I believe, it makes one consider things before acting, with more thorough care (explanation: more things can go wrong without much of a back-up plan, so you instinctively take more care next time you come across that problem). I would be working in digital too if i trusted my PC.

With these markers I have only made three images with them, so I am exceptionally new to them, but I lke them and might continue to try and get better.

Please crit and also please give me tips on marker pens.

Wow, you guys are so impressive, and are really inspiring me to do some Traditional work, which admittedly I haven’t done in a long time. Looking through this thread just makes me smile, there is such great energy and enthusiasm here!

AOAH, it’s great to see you back!

Zhuzhu, wow! :applause:

Zeph, great to see your stuff!

EDIT:

Fl3wk, I don’t think markers are the best medium for drawing, since you can’t really get a range of subtlety with them. I much prefer pencils / ballpoint pens for drawings.

There are really too many people to name, I’m going to actually try to focus on getting some of my own stuff done today…looking forward to seeing more great work!

One recommendation I would have for those that do 3D is to use this opportunity to do some Traditional Drawing in pencil. I think it’s the best / fastest / most efficient way to navigate form and to figure out problem areas. And I’m positive it will pay off in the long run.

Cheers,

Hi Mr Mentler,

So would this reverse copying make someone memorize something better? I can see where you are coming from with saying it makes the artist think more, but would that help to remember parts of the body and such? You have already seen my work, if not its in my sig, would you say this reverse learning would contribute to my learning of the anatomy?

#132

I found if you use the white paper, you can manipulate how much tone you need. Agreed it is an hard medium to draw with, but I dont think its impossible to succede with. I will give it a few more experimental tries, if nothing then I will go back to the more common stuff.

#133

Wow Rebecca.
I would like to commend the hard work you put into making this thread happen. I build my own website so I can understand how much it took to make the images, links, and descriptions.

#134

School isn’t quite as heavy this quarter as it was last, and a major project I’ve been working on is beginning to wind down, so I’m going to give this a shot.

Here’s my first head, #39, Caravaggio, The Calling of Saint Matthew:
