AMD HD7970 experiences

#1

Hey people,
I was wondering if anyone have or had chance to use new radeon HD7970 in 3d?
Maya, Softimage… anything

All tests out there are for gaming so someone from our perspective would probably be able to give better view on the card.
I’m also worried about ald ati card lag when selecting vertex on objects…

Anyway to make it short, anyone got new HD7970 and what are experiences in 3d, especially interested in Softimage performance.

Thanks!

Ok here it is if anyone else is interested.

HD7970 leaves my “old” GTX580 in dust!

For comparison:
GTX580:
cinebench OpenGL: 60
Softiamge, cube subd 831x800x800 shaded view rotation: ~17fps, after totating it for like 30sec or something it speeds up to 80fps. doesn’t work all the time.
Maya 1 riged cahracter simple scene: rotating cam 35fps-40fps, playing 4-5fps

HD7970:
cinebench OpenGL: 90
Softiamge, cube subd 831x800x800 shaded view rotation: ~90fps, no need for half of min rotation, goes smooth from start.
Maya 1 riged character simple scene: rotating cam 70fps-115fps, playing 24-26fps

i can post screen captures of results if needed as well.
In any case I’m nmore than happy.
Good by nvidia for me and hello ATI

What about viewport selection? The bug with selecting points taking ages on a heavy mesh in softimage - is that resolved?

Any viewport quirks? Interested to hear if AMD are getting their act together concerning drivers…

I’m using latest pre-certified drivers from ati page.

no selection problem, which was my biggest concern as well.
sphere 400x400 subd selection works instantly. Well with bunch of more millions it will probably slow a bit but nothing like old selection lag that I witnessed as well on another comp.
So far not a single problem and I’m more than happy.
Only disappointing was that they didn’t provide converters from mini display port to HDMI or DVI but as I saw sapphire edition got those proable other providers as well. oh well…
