Well, since all good VFX Schools are really expensive I was wondering a simple question, what other career can I study that would help me or is related in some way to Visual Effects? (in General), I know its a dumb question but I thought its worth a try to ask the community
Alternative Career
Put quite simply from my point of view as an aspiring games dev, Computer Science [Programming] is pretty much a skillset that is sort after whether in relation to either the Interactive and/or Film mediums. For example, by the way I’m not suggesting this specific learning avenue as a possible educational institute for you to consider, but just a quick online pic to illustrate what’s available amongst a host of options, anyway an excerpt from a Dneg changing career’s profile:
“On the Tech side programming skills are fairly transferable whether that is into roles within our R+D team, Shader Writing roles or joining our Pipeline TDs. Anyone who has dealt with rendering fur, GPU programming, AI and high performance hardware architecture is going to be of value to a VFX house like Dneg. In particular Tools Programmers from games usually make excellent Pipeline TDs.”
Also this recent in depth perspective from FXGuide, on what the overall future holds for the industry, that maybe of some interest to you as well:

Personally programming as a core career is not everyone’s cup of tea, but like it or not entirely defines the digital age we currently live. Previously I’ve through formal training via an incomplete Diploma/Degree’d three year course Web Dev package attempted 11yrs ago, I’d have to say was on the whole although cerebrally math intensive, at the end of the day I found technically an enlightening experience which is saying a lot since my temperament is very much fine art oriented.
Plus something else to think about, practically any industry I could name off the top of my head apart from entertainment, whether manufacturing, engineering, finance, design, aeronautics, marine…etc and so on leverages in some form or other computational expertise integral too their particular operational infrastructures’.

Hi CGXel,
I had the same problem back when I had to decide which school to apply for. I only knew, that it should help me getting better in 3d. But back then, in Germany there was no school only for 3d, so I applied for Graphic Design.
Now, ten years later, I do not regret my decision. Even though I am still a “newbie” in 3d, you get all the “art basics” for creating good images later on.
But I also have to aggree with sacboi, some things are not “createable” without knowledge in programming and math.
But I think it is harder if not impossible, to learn aesthetics if you proceed with a “math career”. Except you are talented in that field and you do not need much of a training.
But even if you are talented in art/aesthetics, you have to develop this talent.
I do not know you, so I don’t know what to advise.
Just wanted to take up the cudgels for art as an opposite to sacboi’s input…
Sry for my English,
Cheers gregor
