Aligning massive amounts of different objects with automation

Hey there everyone!

I need some help with my latest project that requires me to create massive amounts of objects with limited randomization.

Is there a plug-in or script that may create and stack massive amounts of objects (in this case rectangular prisms) into a designated space? Conditions include: various dimensional properties limited within min-max values, min-max distances between objects and a selection of directions which objects short/long sides will face.

I know that it is really hard to find this type of a plug-in or script as long as you don’t code it on your own, but it is really impossible to stack this much objects in a space without making them all the same.

In addition to all these, I remember a guy which made some kind of an abstarct work (the work included an amorph form of a large scale chunk of “earth” made out of inorganic objects. Its edge was disintigrating and flowing into the void) some time ago, I’ve been searching the forums for all day now, but I couldn’t find it. The work included mass amounts of various objects very similar to those in my case, stacked with an orderly fashion inside a previously constructed bounding object. I think I remember that the guy used some automation for the alignment process. That thread may also help me to find a solution, if anyone remembers and finds it.

Sounds like what you might need is a nesting algorithm…a little inventive usage in 2d
and you have a solution. try these puppies.-both have trials.

i “think” there is something else -free plugin that is somewhatsimilar…will track it and get back to ya.

If you use the nesting sw as is it would only place in one plane. You could nest and apply to surface which you have already. After applying the hide or delete the surface.

the guys surface could have looked like a flowing hill, then apply the falling stuff on the hill. Remove the hill and I am glad you posted this so I could see for myself. Damn, I only used it for machine work yrs ago. Real handy on a plasma table… Or would UDT do better for the application after nested? Going to try this gotta get the plug-in… I hope this helped you as much as it did me… even make texture fast this way.

True most nestings sw is along only xy plane but its a short step to a solution as you so quickly noticed.:slight_smile:

I didn’t know Jari Saarinen (or… the guy :P) used just the “orient” command to do all this. But then… why not…

The nesting tools will certainly help me; so again, thanks for the links.

I doubt it took a huge lot of time…< It may be to a greater or lesser extent most
of the time was spent in seeking the solution,but the actual execution of the it in itself
can probably be done in under an hour.
I would probably use repeatable nested clusters…i doubt it would make sense to do every square by hand.
Some things are easier than you might think in rhino.:slight_smile: :slight_smile: …really.

I am pretty sure he did not have an ‘automated script’ or a 'plugin/nesting solution; when he did it…i still don;t think it took him weeks or anything.
You could probably ask him i suppose.:slight_smile:
