Add levels with hard edges?

#1

Is it possible in mudbox to add a new level and tell it to keep hard edges like in maya?
i want to add some sculped detail to a model without losing the overall geometry

#2

mudbox has no edge creasing… but you could subdivide without any smoothing…
open the subD optionbox and turn off smoothing…

#3

i was stupid enough to decide that it cant be done befor i asked,
and now i have the model with smouth edges all around, and i would like to use it as displacement back in maya,
if i reimport it into mudbox, and add new levels without smoothing it,
could i copy all of the sculp and paint data onto the new model?
(same mesh, same UV, same level)

#4

bake a 32bit dispmap and displace it in mudbox…
maps --> sculpt model using dispmap

#5

I tried that now, but the result is horrible, and looks nothing like it should. am i doing something wrong?
its the same OBJ import from maya,
brought it to the same level 5(only this time without smoothing it in the prosses), just reimported it, and did what you said

  • CTRL+ several times to enlarge image

#6

Looks like you may be exporting an 8bit disp map. Try 16bit or float.

#7

where do i set that?

#8

In your step #2, when you choose what file format to save (like tiff, or png), you can also choose what color depth.

i did as yoy said, only to face a new problem :argh:
dont know why this happens, but while baking the displacement map it “invented” new date to be saved and that destroys the whole thing. can anything be done about that?

if it matters for anything here is the UV layout
