Abstract Animation Techniques.

#1

I’ve set out to try some abstract animations for a friend of mine. A music video. I’ve come across some very nice Animations for inspiration such as this one. http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/2010/11/flux-abstract-animation-using-cinema-4d-and-hdri-light-kit-pro/

It uses cinema 4d and various modifiers to achieve some great effects.

I’m a 3ds max user and was wondering if there are some favourite modifiers that people use to transform a primitive shape into these complex ones. ( random effector, fracture object, and deformers like explosion fx, wrap, boole, atom array, and Wind are used but does anyone know any nice 3ds max equivalents?

one technique I’ve noticed in the video above is that he puts a slow moving, large scale noise on a sphere, covers it in particles (cubes) and then hides the sphere.

just things like that. If anyone has any I’d be very appreciative of some pointers, thanks.

Don’t know about Max but Softimage ICE may be a good alternative for these kind of FX.
Here’s a similar example with ICE.

Thanks for that. I’ve been having some good success with noise modifiers and other various combinations.

Here’s another cool video using, cloth and softbodies.

Here’s another impressive abstract video using some excellent methods.

I’ve been trying to replicate the shape in the first few seconds by attaching stiff ropes to rigid bodies. I’ve had success but now if I want to change one parameter I’ve to change it in all the spheres and ropes individually, which is rather painstaking work. If anyone has another way they’d approach this or a method to change multiple parameters of multiple objects more easily, speak up.
