Above & Beyond - Vehicle/Character - nickelmedia

Hey everybody,

This is the first challenge I’ve been involved in. I finally have some time now that school is over.

I’m still pretty new to modeling so I don’t expect to win, especially after seeing the unbelievable talent on this board. My main goal is to get as much feedback as possible to better my skills, and maybe even give others some new ideas. Good luck to everyone.

My initial thought for a flying contraption was something aerodynamic, yet very poorly cunstructed. I’ve sketched something out, but my scanner is acting up at the moment so i’ll post the sketches later.

Here’s what I’ve got so far.

#3

Everyone’s scanner seems to act up these days! (Including mine!!). Hey, that’s a nice shape you’ve got going there. and some rivets already!

#4

Good start you have there. I think this contest is going to be fastinating watching contraptions evolve.

This scanner thing is getting spooky, mine went belly up and I’m having to make do with my digital camera until I can be arsed to look at the current market.

As far as the scanner conspiracy goes, this is the first time i’ve actually connected it in about about 2 years, so I didn’t really expect it to work. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s another update before bed. The car axle and tires will be the base for a ‘helicopter’ propellor.

#6

That axle idea is sweet! I’m loving this entry already!:bounce:

Impressive Nickel-san!

Using 3Dmax still I take it  It’s looking great though. Probably better than I could do in Max…

I sketched a few ideas at work today on some scratch paper… not really sure if I’m going to enter this challenge or not… I’m busy getting ready to move and all… but I’ll try.

I’ll keep an eye on your progress. Good luck!

#8

Update: Added oar helicopter blades and bolted some ceiling fans to the wings.

I’m still struggling on how to do the ‘cockpit.’ Any ideas?

#9

This might be a bit of an odd suggestion, but why not have the cockpit on top of the propeller? (in the middle). I’m not suggesting the pilot will spin around (although it could!!), but sit on the main middle shaft.

Keep this coming! Going great!:wip:

Well, I think it would be hilarious if the pilot would spin around in circles at the top, but I need he/she to be able to spin the blades by hand for some reason.

I think the blades will be powered by an old-fashioned egg beater or something that will be connected to the middle of the car axle. Something that would be extremely inefficient to power the top blades.

Maybe it could be powered with one finger spinning the dial on an old rotary telephone?

hmmm… time to scour the house for more rediculous items.

Haven’t had much time to work on this unfortunately. Here is a very small update. I changed the top blades because I really didnt like the oars.
