About using normal/displacement map

Is it a must to make high and low polygon models simultaneously in order to generate normal/displacement map?

This will cost more working hours on artist side on model basis.

No other cheaper ways?

if you’re capable of rigging/animating a very high resolution model with millions of polygons per piece then theres no need to build a low resolution model. go nuts.

if you want high resolution detail on a low resolution model however, you’re going to need two versions. as of yet, there is no “make this shit look dope and be efficient button” that will generate both versions instantly.
