Sorry to drag this topic all the way up again, but I thought I’d post a painting that was very, very, very nearly finished - but not quite.

The reason to why I suspect it never will be was that it was on the hard drive that was burned out, and even if I get it up and working again (crossing my fingers here), I have a feeling I won’t be able to get back ‘into’ the picture and finish the last few details. This picture disappearing really irks me.

Not quite as much as my “The Pale Voice”, but it still bugs me.

As for what I liked about it - well, I’ve never really painted any fabric patterns quite so complicated before. I was very happy with the colours (they followed my original idea quite well – – and I really liked painting the guy’s face :confused: Oh well. Maybe I’ll get back to the idea one day, when I’m a better painter, and when I am clever enough to do backups, eh?

What I didn’t like about it and was working on, was her expression (much too bland) and adding ‘something’ to the background and foreground. The picture was honestly just a fun painting, trying out something new, etc… but I still feel it was lacking something. I’ll never know now though.

(CGsociety members might have seen it already as I was posting in progress stuff there, but this is the first time I show it to someone outside of it, I think)

You’re right about the faces not quite working, but the rest of the artwork is stunning to look at. The simplicity of the background really brings out the characters (and yes, the fabric ROCKS!) :smiley:

I really like the idea in this piece, and how you paid attention to the lighting so well. Especially the behaviour and texture of the fabric. An amazing pattern, there, and very well executed.

But perhaps missing this image will give you further inspiration to carry this idea even further? Not sure exactly how, but for artists like you, no image is ever truly ‘lost’, it just may not be around for others to enjoy, at least not in the original form. It’s still in there, just looking for a new way to be seen.

I’m in a hurry right now so I’ll just type it as it comes, so excuse me if it comes out garbled.
Looks like the expressions on her face aren’t working together well enough, adding one could help, but then it wouldn’t be her soul as obciously.

on the close up of her face her ‘eye lobe muscle’, you kow the bulge of fat at the outer sides of the eyes, seem very relaxed in a calm observing pose. Also her eye seems to be turned away distractedly either because of that or for the lack of strain in the eyelids themselves. It could even be that some tear or just more swollen vains for a more reddish tint on some parts in her face could help. I could probably think of some more things to try out, lol, but that’s what I see here sort of.

What strikes me is that she’s scheming to trick the guy into something and then sneers at him as she hasn’t lost yet. But there’s very little fear in her face. She knows what’s coming, but seems rather calm and almost serenely sorrowful. That’s also maybe something to look into.
Just my 2 cents.

Good luck wiht this one. I think it’s really beautiful so far, not something to give up on. Glad you posted it here. :slight_smile: Maybe somebody will give you some goo d ideas eventually.

Interesting thread to read. Not only to see some of the great images that other artists have become frustrated with, but to read why they’ve abandoned thier images.

I’ve abandoned more than I could post here. But these are two that I should have finished.


This first one I started when Expose 1 was announced. Like many abandoned images at that time (until present) I became easily frustrated with working with my computer and wasn’t satisfied with the results I was getting with my digital tools. I was a fairly new guy to digital arts a couple years ago, and I suppose I’m just more comfortable working with a pencil and paper.

This image just got more “suckage” as I worked on it and just felt it was better to start with something new. I tried working with it a couple times since then, but I’ve always given up in frustration.


Bunnies! This was originally done for a Poo weekly. I just had fun drawing the aviator bunny and the little kid-bunnies. I really liked this image, but felt that the composition wasn’t working for it. This was pencil on paper and messing with it in Photoshop didn’t even cross my mind.

This one I’ll keep around and maybe pick up on it later. But, most probably I won’t … like hundreds of other sketches I have piled up in a corner of my work area. :smiley:

This is a fanart of American McGee’s Alice. I was crazy about the game at the time. I worked on this at home and at school, but then one day I came home from school and didn’t work on it. And never have again. I love it, but i can’t work on it anymore… I think I screwed up her face, for one… oh well. Not nearly as good as Enayla or… like anybody, but hey, here you go…

What a great idea for a thread Enayla!

I was poking around on my HD and realized that I have a plethora of unfinished work. It’s actually quite scary and made me realize I dont finish most of the stuff I start.

This is an old 3d scene I was working on for awhile. The idea was based off a short story I wrote about political power in france being decided over who had the biggest moustache. I was trying to make an animation of a scene from the short story, but the model and textures just really started bothering me. I realized half way through that I had learned so much in doing it, that I felt I could execute it much better if I did it over. This version just wasn’t doing my idea justice so I scrapped it.

This is a Bouguereau master copy I started working on for a class last year and got completely overwhelmed. I only had a week to finish it and ended up becoming more obsessed with looking at the original and realizing what an amazing painting it was then working on my own, so I eneded up abandoning it. Whats funny is I had it sitting in a corner at an art show to explain my process of painting to people who were interested and someone ended up buying it. In fact, I think it was the only thing I sold…go figure.

I started this portrait of my upstairs neighbor Spencer who is one of the most interesting and eccentric individuals I have ever met. Its a bad photo, but I actually really like this painting. I just stopped working on it one day and havent picked it up since. Once again, i think im just scared that im going to ruin it, which I have to get over and just start painting on it again.

A portrait of my ex-girlfriend that I also gave up on. I have been meaning to get back to it for a year now, but im always affraid im going to ruin what I have since im not in the same state of mind about it. I initially put it away because I felt the tones in her face were getting too saturated and her hair was headed in the wrong direction.

Rustbucket, I actually really like the one of your neighbor… spencer was it? I think if you leave it like it is, it looks great. I love the red/yellow combination, and how its slightly out of focus.

But I know how it is… it may look great as is, but what if you go further with it?? I also know what you mean about not wanting to ruin it… but for the picture of Spencer, I think its wonderful as it is… simple, but it definitely stands out

Thanks for the kind words Dragon! In regards to the spencer painting, I like the general feel of it right now, there are just a few parts that dont read (i.e. the glass he is holding and his shirt). Ill get back to it someday and it finish it up.

Anyways, I have some too

This is a a project that I still love the concept of. The theme was space, time, and matter. I was thinking it would be a triptic with 3 symbolic figures in each. Space: length, width, depth, Time: past, present, future and Matter: solid, liquid, gas. This one was Matter. I will still probably due something similar one of these days, it just won’t be this image. I abandoned it when I had worked on it many many many hours, didn’t save it hits head on table and then my computer crashed and I lost all that work.

This is one of the first things that I did when I got my tablet a year a go. I was working with a tiny brush and it was taking forever, and so I just set it aside… had every intention of going back to it… oh, and it’s a portrait of my brother …or should I say, 1/2 a brother lol

This is a piece I worked on I think aound last January-February… i think. I was pretty damned proud of it too, I may finish it someday.

This is also a piece from around that time. The large ugly looking lines are from the original thumbnail sketch. I have a layer of super thin detail lines over it that are nearly invisible in this size.

This piece… I can’t even remember when I started it. I still like it though and I may finish it sometime far in the future. Maybe…

This is my entry for Spectacular 2D. I had so much inspiration for it. I think I messed up the composition though. I really really want to finish it but every time I open up the file I just sigh. I think it also has to do with the fact that it’s in 500 dpi at 8000 by 6400 pixels so working on it also means quite a bit of lag. I wanted my contest piece to be highly detailed and in great quality, but I may just bring it down to 400 dpi or something. Meh. frustrated

This is a piece I did with the intention of practicing hair techniques with the advice from Linda Bergkvist’s hair tutorial… but somewhere along I just stopped and got distracted again… Meh.

I really love the eyes and lips I painted on this piece. I was practiving a new technique that i believe is not working out all that well but I seem to be stuck with it. I also realized that the lips were to low on the face to I used free transform to move them. Hence the large purplish gap. Woot… Meh. I also have a lot of trouble with necks.

This is a painting I was working on because I was inspired by a photograph. I don’t quite know why I stopped but I did. Wee.

This is probably my most recent painting. It is based off of a dress design I did inspired by Valentino (I love that designer, as well as Versaci, Gucci, BCBG, many, many more). I love this piece. I hope to finish it eventually. I think I scrapped it to do a doodle that turned out quite awful. I think I am going to try to finish my Spectacular 2D piece before I try anything else.

This is a piece I did based off of an ad for Guess (I like their designs). I loved the feel of the actuall photograph but I am pretty sure I messed up the painting pretty bad. Oh well.

Lol, i have almost never finished a work, i know that sucks, but i am too perfectionist!! Its like a curse, when im almost finishing a work im never happy, and i forget about it. Or when im finishing something i like, suddenly a project or a hard homework comes up and takes my inspiration away… howerver ill post my unfinishid work here soon, i hope so…
