A small Welsh animator caught in the headlights of Californian film production

#1

Just thought I should post a hello to all those who have paid for the privilege to read these secret threads.

I’m an animator at PDI, a fairly new visitor to CGTalk, and of course, to CG Society itself.

At the moment I have lots of shots on the go, but I have to keep checking on the state of Mr. Jason Schleifer’s fingers, since they’re worn down to nothing from all of the replying he has to do for his “Meet the Artist” thread. Go and have a read if you haven’t done so already!

: )

Best,
K

Welcome aboard Kevan! Good to hear someone is keeping an eye on that trouble maker Jason.

Hi Kevan!

However did a welsh guy end up in Cali… tell me! I’m Irish and in the same boat you were a few years ago. Did you just move over?
Congrats on getting into PDI btw.
P.S-Which part of Wales do you live in? I’ve been over there a couple of times…

Hello All! Thanks for the warm welcome.

Pascal - Just by coincidence, I saw your work for the first time the other day. Ace! Also, I believe you know my cube mate, Emilio. He says to say, and I quote, “Shaddap!”.

Taoizm - Jason does indeed need keeping an idea on, for when his super-stardom catapaults him into Outer Space, I intend to be holding on to his ankles.

Paperclip - Um, well, PDI saw my student film at my degree show in London back in 2001. I interviewed a couple of times whilst still at University, but had to turn them down in 2002 as I’d just started a Masters degree. I thought I’d blown it, started work at a VFX facility in Soho, but then got the call up in late 2003. Woo!

I grew up in a village about 20 miles outside of Cardiff. It’s v. green, and v. pretty, but there’s almost no large scale CG features being made there. : )

Hiya Kevan :wavey: I LOVED MADAGASCAR!!!

Cool!

The general reaction to the film on CGTalk has been very positive, (particularly the animation). It was really fun to work on, and I think we all learnt a lot. It’s the first time that I have worked on a cartoon with a proper 2D sensibility, really smooshing the characters whenever possible.

: )

Yeah I really cannot understand how anyone could not love the film  It was such fun to watch - already seen it twice and can’t wait to see it again! The animation was just superb and I loved King Julian and the penguins as well. Such cool characters. It must have been so much fun to work on.

The critics seem pretty divided as to it’s merits. It’s still listed as rotten on rottentomatoes.com, but all of you guys had a good time, so that’s all that matters, really.
“Mad” is simply fun, and I think it was being critiqued in comparison to “The Incredibles”, which is perhaps a little disingenuous. Pixar’s latest is an amazing piece of film-making, not just for an animated film, but for any means of production, and aims to satisfy a different goal.

I really cannot fathom how anyone could label the film as “rotten”, unless they were judging it by standards that didn’t apply to it. I know people were complaining about the “poor story line” but it’s a bloody family film, so I don’t understand how anyone could have expected a complex or involved plot. I think the story was just fine

It really irks me to see people ragging so heavily on animated films like this. Personally I think a person would have to have no sense of humour or imagination to hate this film.

I actually haven’t seen madascar yet, I was waiting for it to come out on DVD, I prefer watching DVDs…

Your student film- would that be 'thief'? I had a blast watching that! :scream:

Thanks Leigh. As long as it does well with real people who pay money to see it, then I’m a happy lad! Scary avatar by the way. It brings to mind the scene where that particular character was suckling a pig on national television, something I was hoping to forget. : )

Paperclip - Nope, I got the job based on a short film I did called, “Joe’s Playtime”. It was my undergraduate piece at Uni.
