Hi everyone.
I’ve been working on my reel and I decided I should go back to basics. I chose a relatively simple model with relatively simple materials. I know the proportions aren’t exact but this is more of a material practice.
however, I’m a little stuck and could use some pointing in the right direction.
this is my reference and where I am at right now:

these are my current diffuse, spec and spec textures (done in mari) and shader settings (maya and vray):

any help is appreciated as I’ve never attempted photo-realism before.
should I model the rest of the environment to achieve the same lighting or is it redundant at this stage?
how can I improve my textures? (when it comes to details I’m thinking of dust, scratches and oil stains).
how can I improve my shader?
I should mention that I have tried sculpting some details in blender, but received odd results when exporting a normal map. should I learn z-brush for the purpose of creating normal\displacement maps?
any help will be appreciated.
thanks in advance.
