What exactly will happen when the “doors close”? Obviously there will be no new posting, but will the existing posts be removed, or will they still be browseable/searchable? There’s some good info here, it’d be a shame to lose it entirely.

I’ve often thought about buying the version upgrade for my copy. (I apparently bought at the wrong time for stability … AM2002) Without access to unfiltered reports (unlike the official forum’s cheerleading) I doubt I will.
Wegg said,
“Trying to promote CGTalk amongst the Animation Master community has proven to be rather futile without the support of Hash Inc…”
Leigh said,
“…that IS the sole reason why this forum is closing…”
I’m curious as to what sort of “support” is expected; web space, advertising? Whatever it is, why is it essential?
Correct me if I’m wrong (I probably am), but my impression is that the problem isn’t so much “lack of support”, but more of a problem of active opposition to this forum by the Hash powers that be.
Despite the fact that I had severe problems using A:M, and have long since “moved on”, it IS sad to see an alternative resource such as this one getting the indirect effect of “official” short-sighted insular thinking.
For those who still use and love A:M, I feel for ya’.
No, this has nothing to do with advertising. It has to do with the fact that Wegg has received repeated hostility from Martin Hash regarding this forum. In light of this, we feel that closing this forum is the best course of action, so that Wegg can concentrate his efforts on a forum where those efforts are actually appreciated.
Becuase Billy and Martin don’t see eye to eye is no reason to punish the rest of us.
If this is not a money issue, keep the forum open.
Pass the moderator resp. to me. I seem to be the only person who can get my hash models to play nice with my polygon apps.
This all looks very much and eye for an eye decision to me.
Ditto. The creation of this forum might have been an act of rebellion a couple of years ago, but it’s turned into a great resource for lots of us. Not to mention the amount of public exposure that A:M could never achieve on the official Hash forums.
Besides, the A:M forum is practically the only reason I visit CG Society these days.
Do a search on the Hash forums for “CGTalk”. I believe the only references you will find are quites from Martin himself. It makes for interesting reading. And that doesn’t even begin to touch on the e-mails I have received from Martin himself discussing litigation and rather in-depth descriptions of what the people who frequent CGTalk are like and what their motivations are. It would probably be safe to say he lumps CGTalk into the “Professionals” category. Do a search for that as well.
THEN. Compare that to the support I receive from the software makers of the other forum I am involved in. . .
I have witnessed your involvement in the [snip] community since you came on board, and I know you to be a great guy that only wants things to progress positively. I certainly appreciate your involvement in the [snip] community. I only wish that I could clone myself a few times so that I can do all the things that I would like in order to make your (and all users) experiences with [snip] even more enjoyable.
and. . . considering I am the only person selling an instructional video describing how to allow A:M to work with Lightwave. . . I’m beginning to think your kind of. . . full of stinky brown stuff.
Wegg, who are you talking to here? Me or just everyone in general?
I’ve never met you, but I always felt that you were very level headed and fair.
Shutting down the hash section just because you feel betrayed by hash is not fair to us.
Your intentions, obviously have just drifted apart from that of hash… the only thing I see that needs to be done is just pass the moderator duties to some one else… and I’m not talking about the stinky brown stuff when I say duty:)
Also, how is your studio doing? I always felt like that was source of aggrevation on the hash front…
Why should the forum close because of bad blood between Wegg and Martin. I think Martin amongst others, believes that we are all acolytes of Wegg, so if this forum should close simply due to Wegg’s departure, this would prove it.
It’s already been pointed out, there is another moderator here and Mike has nobly volunteered. Heck, I’d be happy to step up to the plate, it can’t be that difficult
I don’t think that is completely fair to say Zan. I usually check here everyday and don’t consider myself an “expat.” I find it very inspirational to see the stuff posted on CGTalk in general and liked the fact a:m was featured on a professional board. You, yourself Zan have posted your work and displayed your product here numerous times. And while neither you nor I have received front page status a few a:m users have. So I for one am sorry to see this section close because not only was it a place where people talked about the apps problems. It was also a place where others could see its strengths.
I just don’t understand this. Look at the forum as it is now! What is there not to like?
There may not be as much activity here as there could be but it isn’t dead. Actually, things have been picking up a bit. I found out recently that a new Russian forum is linking here:
Ok, I’m officially lost. Wegg, is this directed to me, or someone else?
I didn’t attack you. If I said anything bad, I take it back.
I think you’re an asset to this software and this forum!
Leigh is are aware this is a third-party forum, right? It wouldn’t matter how much Martin Hash is against it (if he is)… he has no control over who visits or posts here. None. What’s he gonna do? Take away their splines? The whole premise is absurd.
The real reason there is so little traffic here is because the Hash A:M forum is where the info is. That’s where the talented users are posting their work. That’s where the newbies can get helpful answers to their questions.
Consider one of the typical posts above where a guy say he hasn’t used A:M in five years yet claims to know what Hash is like now. And then goes on to tell us about his other software choices. Why would someone looking for A:M answers want to spend time sorting through the noise? They get all the marketing that everyone else does, they’ve heard the pitches and made their choice. I could just about guarantee you that every A:M user has already heard about all the other choices out there.
If there was helpful material here, people would be here, users would be here, it’s that simple.
This forum was negative to begin with and has stayed that way. That’s what happens when the moderators aren’t really “moderators” at all.
Consider:
If you actually did that search you know that statement is not true. But none-the-less you said it anyway. Why?
I got eight pages of threads, obviously not all written by Martin Hash. A search on threads in which “CGTalk” is mentioned and in which Martin has also posted brings up only eight theads. Over two years. Hardly a campaign against CGTalk, but imagination is a powerful thing.
All you CGTalk A:M users… come on over to the A:M forum.
Show us your good work, ask us your good questions, give us your good answers. :bounce:
Remember, it’s a user forum… 99.9% of the activity on it is by users, not Hash employees. If you got a gripe about Hash policies, send it to Hash itself; the forum users don’t have the answers you need. If you got a bug report, log it on AMReports where it can be assessed; the forum users aren’t the programmers who can fix it. (But if you got a cool idea for a plug-in, there are some users who are pretty snappy programmers)
And if you just want to bitch…there’s this new internet thing called a “blog” made just for you. Check it out!
