A few questions.

Mello!
How are you lot?
I’m the newbie. And i have a few questions!

My first question is.

What is good about Wings 3D? I mean how good is it versus Blender, 3D canvas(my favorite), etc. For beginners like me:p

And how different is 3D Studio Max from Wings 3D, i’ve always wanted to know what 3Ds max is like. Just havent got the chance to get a trial version of some sort. Is Wings 3D as powerfull as 3ds max?

And Finaly…What does NURBS mean?

Thanks guys!

Hello there.

What is good about Wings 3D?

Best thing about it imo is the intuitive interface and fast workflow. I prefer it to any other modeller I’ve tried. All it does is model, this allows it to have a very clean, easy to navigate interface.
Download it, grab a few tutorials from the threads above and see for yourself.

Dpends what you mean by “good”. If you need to animate, Blender wins, if you need to model, Wings does y’know?
It’s a very different program from Blender. Blender has far more features ( animation, bones, particles, better rendering etc.) but is much more complex to learn. A lot of people make their models in Wings then export them to another program such as Blender for texturing and rendering. ( Cinema4DCE for me but everyone will have their own favourite.)

As for Canvas, again, it’s very different so it’s hard to compare the two. I prefer Wings, but then I would.
I say Wings is a great choice for a beginner. Practice learning modelling before you worry about flashy particlefx etc.

Totally different. Max is far more complex than Wings, it has full rendering, animation and particle effects etc , Wings is a dedicated modeller. On paper Max is far more powerful, but then at 3000 quid it should be. I know which one I’d want to be using if I had a college assignment due in tomorrow though.

Gmax is a free but very limited version of Max. ( No renders, restrictive file formats etc.)

Or get yourself a 30 day demo if you want to see what the full version of Max is like…

Most of the major apps have demos available, just check the companies websites and try em all, they are free y’know?

And Finaly…What does NURBS mean?

Non Uniform Rational B-Splines.
It’s just a way of defining the geometry of a model mathematically using curves. Another way to model stuff basically.

Anyway, good luck and have fun.

Thanks so much Steve. Really appreciate your help!
goes off to meddle with Wings

Btw. Could you tell me a good renderer i could use with Wings. Thats free.

Sorry for the double post

Yafray or Povray; both free.

Yafray is a bit better implemented in Wings3d right now, but Povray itself is more mature.

What would you use to set up your scene and lighting if you used Yafray or Povray to render? Those renderers don’t have that ability built-in do they?

Thanks

Alternatively, you could probably find a mag like Computerarts or 3D world with Cinema 4D CE on the coverdisk. It has a very decent render engine, although animated renders are restricted to 640x480.

Not free, but near enough.

Is there anything to set up your scenes and lighting in Yafray or Povray or are they straight renderers?

If so, what do wings3d modelers use to set up their scenes and lighting (and materials and shaders)?

I’m clueless about POVray, but Yafray comes as a plugin for Wings, so you position lights , objects etc in Wings as normal then select render > yafray.

As for materials, I can’t do much more than basic colour/ transparency / shinyness etc with yafray. I dare say there are all kinds of cool things you can do, but I just found Cinema so much easier to work with that I never really explored yafrays potential.
