A few new wing user questions

#1

Hiya,

only just started using Wings the other day, and I am very impressed with the program. But I have a couple questions which I can’t work out.

  1. Can I have a image in the viewport background? I see I can import a image but that creates a 3d object with the image on it. I would like to place a image in the background of the viewport so I can use them for references.
(This isn’t much of an issue for me, just im used to working that way)

  2. Can Wings3D to point by point modeling? I would like to add points and create polygons from those points.

  3. How can I create a plane? I tried creating a cube, selecting all points and using Flatten, but its still really a cube (has 6 sides)
Seems to me Wings only supports ‘closed’ objects

  4. Where do you change keyboard shortcuts? I can’t find it anywhere

  5. Can i view my mesh in wireframe?

I love this program, and If i could do point by point modeling, I think this would be my prefered modeler

Thanks

  1. You cant set an image as backgroung in the geometry window. You can as u mentioned set it to an image plane or “view” image to put it in a seperate window in the layout of wings.

  2. No you cant do point by point modeling or poly by poly modeling, wings uses winged edge technology allowing only solid meshes. Ex. http://w1.211.telia.com/~u21114223/winged.swf.html How the floor in that object is created is very charactaristic for winged edge tech. It as its ups and downs but really allows a different work flow, imho i like it.

  3. Same thing

  4. If you want to change your hotkeys i first recommend not to use the .15a version, it has an hotkey issue. All defined hotkeys can be seen in Help - Defined hotkeys, if you want to set a new one, just hoover something in the menu, tap insert and then the key you want.

  5. You can view you mesh in several modes, unfortunately not all of the support realtime-modeling.

Shift + Tab = Smooth shaded with wire (click w to get rid of wire)
Tab = Shaded mode, click w for wire aswell.
w = Only wireframe.

Then you have alot more modes, like proxy mode, allowing you to see a smoothed version inside a lopolycage and so on.

Enjoy your wingsing :o)

Btw. In the video I insert - bridge - connect (making the inner edge) - moving - and at the end dissolve to make the floor.

  1. You may create image plane in teh viewports

  2. Wings is a kind of solid modelling tool. It doesnt work with surfaces (ie. hollow objects, like any other program) but it works with closed objects. Therefore you cant model with a poly-by-poly technique. It works the best with the box modelling or edge-looping method.

  3. Pass…I haven`t made any planes in wings yet…

  4. Shortcut is pretty the best. Move your mouse over a menu item, press Ins, then press your desired shortcut

  5. Press W for swithching wireframe and wire on shaded
Press TAB for switching between shaded and wire on shaded
Press Shift TAB for switching between wire on shaded and SDS

You can set a image plain more effectively by:

  • Right click > Image Plain > Choose your image file (bmp, tga, or tiff format) This will place the image on the x axis and filpped for the shift-x axis.

  • In the geomentry graph (Window > Geomentry Graph) you will see your image plain listed with three little icon next to it. Click on the lock to lock your image plain - NOW it is just a background image, but will show up as a 3d object - just delete when done.

If you need it on another axis Rotate before you you lock the image. same with scaling ect…

Thanks for your replies and help.

I can see me using wings more and more in the future, there is this ‘something’ that I like about it

I do most of my modeling in wings. but if you need a point by point modeler checkout anim8or recently a beta 0.85 was released it still has a few bugs in it but it has alot of new modeling tools the bugs should be fixed fairly soon. version 0.81 is stable it just lacks some the new features. Theres not much for shortcut keys in it but I found a freeware macro program that does a good job and I created a macro definition list to use with it specifically for anim8or. The macro program is listed in the general anim8or forum topic Hotkeys 1.51 and theres a link to my definition file there to wich you can edit to assign your own hotkeys. http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html
