A critical question, please help!

Hello.

We are a small group that want to make a game, the island of the game is a real one. it’s Kish - a small island in Iran - I wanted to make the island with 3D Max which seems sooooo slowmotion (takes tons of time) and boring, so I have searched and have found out that there are some alternatives like CityEngine and Google Sketch, Now my question is which way is the fastest way to create the island in 3D:curious:?

Please note that I have DWG and OSM files of the island. the DWG file is an AutoCAD one that is just a 2D surface whereas the OSM file is Open Street Map. That’s so puzzeling for me, I spend hours to figure out which is better or even to figure out what City Engine does and what OSM is.:banghead:… Please help me even if you know little about them. Our project is delaying just because I don’t know how to make a 3D model of the island in the best way .

If you know any ways to model the island, please help and suggest:cry:.

Hey man,

I don’t have any experience with this, but I think a lot of the work for big maps gets done by your game engine. Try to dig up some info about how they made the Altis map for ARMA 3. I think most of the plants and high resolution textures are procedurally generated by the engine, and only the base mesh and overall texture colors were made by the artist. I would imagine they also used instantiated props and buildings that were made in a 3D package separately, and placed by a team of people in the game engine.

As he says, game engine does a lot of work for you, if you know how to handle it. In case of plants I would say they created fewvarious types and let the engine to copy and mix them on designated places. And buildings, Im afraid you have to create them all in 3D package (separatedly), but it also gives you great control of what are you doing. Also, if you have similar buildings in your game to be placed, you can copy already created one or use them as default model and adjust it, you wont have to do it again from beginning.
Just for the record, what engine are you tend to youse ? UDK ? Cryengine ? Another ?

Hello.
No, actually the game engine I have is not capable of making cities automatically, As far as I know we can only move rotate or scale and give material to 3D objects in the game engine.
But I agree that some apps are able to create cities but they’re not “real” anymore. My target is to create a “semi-real”(all road and general look of island looks real) or “all-real” island (all buildings and roads and other stuff are real)in the fastest way possible.
I’ve searched about the ARMA and the Altis, nothing useful were found :frowning: .

Well… Oh I didn’t said anything about the game engine, it’s Unity3D 4 Pro. As far as I know - as I said before - it can’t create city or island. But it can add/import 3D objects to the already imported objects that were imported before.Still can’t decide a way to create that 92Km^2 island.
