A couple of new Images

Check it out!

I came across this one a few days ago and couldn’t say no - could have bought that new PC I’ve been meaning to get but my old one can hang on for a little while longer:-)

These P90’s are the nicest pickups I’ve ever heard…I’ve had many guitars with 90’s but nothing sounded like this one.

Nice one with great aging- looks quite rare actually. I had a SG Special in mid 70’s, must have had P90s, not that I knew in those days. I purchased new, instead of a Strat which were a bit naff then- apparently.
Oh, I couldn’t resist getting Modo… great app and love the functionality of the modeller.
I’ve spent some time in the c4d 10.5 demo and I’m surprised at the features over my current version- a live interactive render selection marquee for one thing. Maxon & co are pushing out a lot of tutorial videos, but not to the level of Luxology, consequently they aren’t pushing what c4d can do. The current blurb on the Maxon site doesn’t say anymore that BodyPaint is included in the core application.

The price on the SG was great…if it was any other Gibson or Fender and a 1971 it would have been 4-5 times as much. SG’s are some of the best bargains in vintage guitars right now - I never got it for that reason, just that it sounded so good. It has one of those skinny pencil necks which I’ll put up with in order to have the sound it produces.

Great on getting Modo - it really is a wonderful app and very capable. I haven’t had much problem with stability and find it very useful for many things.

The tutorials are fabulous but I’m still struggling with some of the more advanced concepts of using SDS. I imagine I’ll get them but still find nurbs to be more productive in many cases. Mind you, I just finished a simple architectural project which went through many, many changes. Was a snap in Modo and would have been very time consuming with nurbs.

I’m looking forward to seeing V7 of EI. Been working in EI for the last couple of weeks and continue to find it to be an excellent production tool.

By the way, I got a DVD on Les Paul a few weeks ago…fabulous DVD!! Just an amazing innovative guy!

There was a jam session in the DVD with Les Paul and a guitarist called Tommy Emmanuel which I enjoyed…never heard of him before. Was in the music store yesterday and came across a DVD of Tommy in concert.

This guy is absolutely amazing!!! I imagine you have heard of him but if not he is one creative musician!! I can’t rave enough about his ability:-)

Yea Emmanuel is a super and very intense guitarist! Love his ‘Over the Rainbow’ Quite a bit of his stuff on UTube.

Another great, but unknown is Gary Potter- virtually just a pub player- shows there’s little money in music.

To not get the thread closed down… It’ll be interesting to see what EI come up with in Vs7, but I imagine with GI, speed will become more an issue with no implementation of multiple core rendering. Modo is just incredibly fast.

I think you need to have used SDS for a bit just to appreciate how good Modos modeller is.
No one has commented on the Mondo shader presets advertised elsewhere on this forum and the great presentation you can download. Strange…

My favorite on the DVD is his rendition of Heartbreak Hotel…just surprisingly good:-)

I’ll check out Potter’s stuff.

Yes, multi-processor support would get me excited:-)

Modo is incredibly fast - sometimes I can’t belive I have the ‘full works’ going because of the speed…soft raytraced shadows and HDRI illumination are just common day to day features i use in all of my projects there now.

I’m not sure what you mean on the shader presets?

I thought they looked mostly very good.

Postscript: How dare you complain about upgrade prices on a public forum… Lol

“Postscript: How dare you complain about upgrade prices on a public forum… Lol”

Yeah, I guess I’m just a grouchy, big old whiner! LOL

Yes, this is one hell of a piece of software- a dream come true- or is it?. Incredibly fast render, (renders GI faster than EI can do phong rendering…ok I exaggerate a little bit) producing very realistic and lifelike GI renders with many bells and whistles- but as they say, ‘all the glitters is not gold…’ I did quite well for a couple of days with no glitches, but then symmetry went haywire and this feature is dead useful when modelling. After reading more of the similar on the forums, my copy resides in the trash can.
I’m sure EI are going to come up with some pretty good enhancements with 7, but its like travelling back into the distant past, with poor or no material preview, poor material placement, no UV mapping features that I’m aware of. Looks like its c4d and vray after all…

Hi Martin and Paul

Some music for you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtAvauUNULg

If you have an old Selmer i will give you £15 for it.

I use MODO 301 Build Number :22855 with OBJ2FACT v214
with no problems.

I’ve been in Modo for the last week, on and off, and not one hick-up but I know some have been having experiences like you mention. Seems mostly guys on PCs for a change. I think Modo is somewhat like EIM where if you do the stuff it likes it’s fine but if you deviate then it can get flakey.

I just finished a project where I had to model in the same environment where I would end up rendering in order to achieve some sublte shadings. Picky stuff but it worked amazingly well…especially the fall-off tools. Those are very useful.

C4D is usually very stable and the Vray port appears to have gone well - it’s a good render combination. If Maxon fixed all of the shading issues with imported models I think I would join you but until they do there is not a whole lot of appeal there for me.

I think I’ll get that put-off purchase of the PC and get Brazil V2 up and running. I liked what I saw in Brazil4Rhino but Rhino isn’t the best environment to render from. The nPower importer (Nurbs from Rhino) into Max allows for adjustable quad meshing and I’ve been exporting the results to Modo - works quite good though some clean-up is needed.

…15lbs! it’s a deal. Wow, that guy can play!

Hi Paul.

Could you show an example of this problem with imported models…?

I think I’ve had some ocasional problems with models but fixed it with the “optimize” command…

Could you share a simple model to test…?

I don’t have anything off hand to send you - it’s usually hit and miss when it occurs. Just when I think I’ve solved the problem with a certain mesh something else crops up.

I’ve used the optimize command to some success and try to import models in at a very large scale so that the numerical precision of C4D has enough digits to bring in everything as accurately as possible.

I’ve sent Maxon a number of models over the years when a bad one would crop up. They were even developing a .fac importer at one time and it worked fairly well in some cases - I guess they abandoned it when the guy doing it left the company? …or some such.

I can usually make it passable when I really need to (but hardly use C4D so not too concerned anymore) but am very spoiled at how well EIM exports into EI. My line up usually is Rhino to accept client models in IGES, join and stitch there and export as ACIS, organize in EIM and export from there. Always trouble-free, perfect results in EI.

Or I’ll mesh in Rhino and use the .3dm importer in Modo for half decent results. Rhino is pretty good at times for meshing but EIM’s mesher is pure gold (for EI anyway).

#35

I’m not overly excited by the Rhino 3dm importer. When it’s released it will require converting the Rhino model to mesh before saving to 3dm. Non mesh entities will not get imported.

For me
3dm > Concepts > fact
or sat -> EIM -> fact / obj
still seems the best way.

£15? That’s very generous. Nice images. Like the guitarist, sort of McLaughlin meets the Gypsy Kings. I think Luxology have tried to go too far too soon, but a great app in the early stages of development. The modeller spoils you for what else is out there… and the renderer also.

I sized up & rendered off a lot of the supplied scenes with modo . Really good and fast, although the lighting set up is a bit formulaic for my taste- ideal for production line pack shots I suppose. The camera scene looks so realistic. I do hope Luxology can sort out some of the bugs- the symmetry issue especially.

Sadly, I don’t find Concepts to play with Rhino as well as it could. Most often Rhino nurbs come in as unjoined surfaces and it can be a bit of a pain to join everything up…though maybe my import precision is too high? I haven’t really looiked at it too closely.

I like the Modo importer as it keeps Rhino’s layers intact, but yes, would be nice to have it mesh the nurbs upon import.

#39

What!? You expect these tools to always work properly?

What really sold me was the speed and after getting somewhat familiar with things the look I was able to achieve with the render. That auto preview sure is useful:-)

#40

Well against my better judgement I reinstalled the app to see if symmetry would work again, from the beginning but no. Strange because it was all working lovely for the first few days of the original installation. Yes, I could struggle on , but it doesn’t give you confidence. I will now upgrade to the basic c4d 10.5 package and then get the vray plug in, but wait- I wonder what the next EI 7 will be like?
